Which band is less religious 20m or 17m ?

Started by Galen Thurber. Last reply by Emmett Hoops Apr 20. 4 Replies

I'm trying to decide which QRP HF band to use 20m or 17m. Which one is less religious? Heard that 17m was more classy, but a 17m antenna wont match other bands. Or should I build a quad or yagi and…Continue

There's more at play than just right or wrong or smug presumptions of some metaphysical way of knowing.

There is a sense of moral superiority that leads the believer to feel morally superior to non-believers, and the desire to have another class of people upon whom they can look down and feel superior, is one of the attractions to religious belief.

This is the reason for the sense of smug superiority, the condescension, the arrogance in how they deal with non-believers.  It is also why the more conservative they are, the more homophobic they are as well.

This is what is so ultimately frustrating about theism / atheism being thought of as a "debate."  You cannot have a debate by first presenting a reasoned argument while having your opponent tell you he is simply right; that no amount of argument will change him because what he believes and you assail is something that was given to him as a sacred gift.  It's not an argument: it is a confrontation with willing ignorance.

The biggest problem is the disconnect.  A believer will ask, "What would it take for you to believe..." and you can give them an answer based on evidence.  When you ask the believer the same question they invariably say "nothing" and add something about how their faith is unassailable.

Many years back I made the mistake of starting a conversation with some guys on 40m doing a bible study net. Never again. I had not before then met such cantankerous, obnoxiously condescending & bitter people on the air. They even beat out Gary Gorniak from back in the days when he wasn't so heavily self-medicated.
. . . Somewhere between the illiterate, anti-intellectual & anti-science morons on the air, I find it more difficult every year to just get on the air & see who's out there to talk with. Especially when they start in on their crush on Jesus.
. . . And I have a relative does Jesus rap, even. Yeah.

Don't know how active they are, but the links for the PDF tracts still work.  73 de AB2ZI

Last update was in 2009. Is it still active or did they just pay 10 years in advance to their host ISP?

Atheist Tracts

Comment by Emmett Hoops on April 27, 2014 at 10:40am

Kevin, I got one of those tract QSLs (unbidden) earlier this year.  It was so wacky I seriously thought of sending it to the FCC; then I realized there are no disqualifying behaviors for amateurs except for the usual: deliberate and repeated off-band operation; repeatedly playing music; getting paid for your radio work, etc.  Maybe if they had something like a psychological evaluation requirement, we woudn't have 14.313.

I don't even bother trying to reply to the faithful any more.  If they bless me I just say have a nice day and 73.  Although when one sends me a tract in the mail for a QSL I will send them back one of the atheist tracts I've found online.

Emmett, write to me off-list for a cure for your dipole coax problem. As for the damned Christians pushing the prejudices and superstitions of the cult priests of ancient, tribal sky-gods, there's not much to be said there.  Though I have been annoyed enough to reply with quips like "If you hear the call of Osiris, be sure to answer it.  He's just dying to hear from you"
