Amazingly, this is the most "stuck in a rut" state I have ever lived in. I work for the federal government and there are prayers given at meetings. And if I hear Pascal’s Wager on more time, I am going to vomit.

Two churches on every street is the norm. You must live amongst heathens!

There is a group in Gadsden called the Etowah County Rational Alliance (ECRA). In Chattanooga, there is the Chattanooga Freethought Association. That may be some options for you. There are many more places in the Southeast are more isolated from a local freethinking group.

Good to meet you Kevin. I live in Tunnel Hill Ga. Not to far away. My house sits in between three churches. I think of my house as a speck of sanity amongst the delusional.

Hello from the heart of Sand Mountain. Yes, I am an Atheist living in the midst of fundamental believers. There are actually a few non-believers here. I do have a bit of trouble finding free-thought groups in this area. I have considered starting one, or maybe, getting a couple of groups from Huntsville to branch into this area. I have felt out-of-place for a number of years as a result of living here. Actually, I have learned, that being rabid and completely honest with the delusional fundis in the area, is the best buffer against feeling like a victim. Nevertheless, it would be great to meet many more free-thinkers, Atheists, Anti-theists, Brights, etc. in this area.

Nice to meet you all :) My husband and I grew up on the NE Alabama/NW Ga border, and I can definitely relate to feeling out of place. We actually took off for New England and didn't look back to the South until just a couple of years ago. Luckily, I've grown to give less of a crap about the comments I get when someone brings up religion. :)

Birmingham Freethought Society is meeting, but the school did something to their domain. See http://radicalacademia.webs.com for link to BFS and other atheist resources.

There might be a few non-theists showing up in the Troy area. A company called CGI has opened up a new regional headquarters there and is moving a lot of people (including me and my family in). In fact it occurred to me that with the number of companies in the US moving south and bringing people with them that we might start seeing more of the south "going blue" like the northern states have.
Comment by Micah on February 1, 2010 at 4:31pm
In the other direction, there is Southeast Alabama Freethought Association and near Dothan. They have about one meetup a month.

If you do go, say hi to Rick for me.
