Alfred Russel Wallace: The contemporary who pre-empted Darwin

Started by Dr. Terence Meaden Feb 18, 2013. 0 Replies

Professor Steve Jones wrote for the London Daily Telegraph recently this splendid short biography of Alfred Russel Wallace and his major contributions to 19th century science.Fourteen years younger, Alfred Russel Wallace discovered the ideas of natural evolution in the 1850s which Charles Darwin had been working on for thirty years. Alfred Russel Wallace was an immensely clever man. This short biography is well worth reading; so please read on . . . Alfred Russel Wallace, the man who pre-empted Darwinwww.newsrt.co.ukBorn: January 8, 1823, Llanbadoc,Wales, GB    Died: November 7, 1913, Broadstone,…Continue

2011 Census of England and Wales: Christian numbers slump, Atheist numbers rise

Started by Dr. Terence Meaden Jan 31, 2013. 0 Replies

Referring to the BBC news bulletin of 30 January 2013---      http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-20675307   ---the 2011 census revealed that the population of England and Wales identifying themselves as cultural christians has fallen by four million to 33.2 million in the past 10 years. In percentage terms the fall is from 72% to 59%.At the same time those professing to be atheist rose from 15 to 25%.There are 14.1 million people of no religion compared to 7.7 million a decade ago. That's the good news. The bad news is a rise in the number of Muslims, with the proportion of the population in 2011 standing at 4.8%, or 2.7 million (which is up 2% from 1.5 million in 2001), and a rise in the numbers of those with Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish and Sikh faiths. There are now 817,000 Hindus, a rise of 264,000 since 2001. The Jewish faith also rose by 3,000 over the last decade from 260,000 to 263,000.Continue

In small change this week I acquired a Charles Darwin £2 coin

Started by Dr. Terence Meaden. Last reply by Dr. Terence Meaden Dec 25, 2012. 5 Replies

I was delighted this week to receive a Charles Darwin £2 coin in my change when shopping. The coin was struck by the British Mint as a limited edition in 2009 to mark the bicentenary of Darwin's birth. It depicts a profiled head of the great man face to face with a chimpanzee. Although legal tender, the Darwin £2 coin is rarely found in small change: "Its rarity means that, in mint condition it is worth three or four times its face value. Even a used coin is worth double its tender value. The price acceleration means that it is well worth seeking out as an investment."  Another Darwin coin was issued in 22 carat gold. This is not in circulation although it, too, is legal tender. Most are in the hands of coin collectors.  Continue

British state schools and academies banned from teaching creationism

Started by Dr. Terence Meaden. Last reply by The Doubter Oct 17, 2011. 4 Replies

The Education Secretary Michael Gove encouragingly declared last week that only scientific explanations for the origins of life and the cosmos can be taught in British state schools and academies.   Besides the tens of thousands of state schools and the hundreds of expensive fee-paying 'public' schools, the academy idea of free schools is being encouraged by the Conservative government (partly to save the government some of its taxpayers money).    Academies can be founded and supported by any group that is rich enough and yet also receive some state support. [It would be useful to have atheist groups backing a few such schools, seeing that most are religious schools].    More than 300 groups have applied to the Department of Education to launch free schools----like the Everyday Champions Church in Newark, Nottinghamshire, which has asked to teach creationism by pretending it is science.   The D of E, however, again emphasises that it "will not accept any academy or free school…Continue

Tories to promote more 'faith' schools.

Started by John Bunyan. Last reply by lt_zippy2 May 9, 2011. 11 Replies

This post from the NSS website had me step back in shock. I always thought the tory party had at least a little more sense than to jump on the faith bandwagon. They just lost my vote in the next election. Any thoughts ?Link : http://www.secularism.org.uk/tories-to-oversee-biggest-expans.htmlContinue

Please get this information out to everyone you know, please use your social networking to reach even more.  Something must be done about this.  It will only change if more people are aware of it.

I am seriously bothered by these two organisations - http://www.noahsarkzoofarm.co.uk/pages/research/when-geology.php - & - http://www.noahsarkzoofarm.co.uk/pages/visiting/visiting.php - They are defilers of intellect! I just wanted to let people know of their existence if you wern't already aware - dangerous places - people need to know.

Just wondering if there is anyone in Cornwall? My Mam lives there and she is looking to meet other Atheists or humanists in the area. Rural community life there is generally based around the local parish, village hall, W.I etc. so it can be quite marginalising.
