I though some of you might like to give this band, Rumours of Whores, some support. You can hear one of their tunes at: http://www.amazingtunes.com/users/rumoursofwh seems to be making a topical p...

A good place to start are the lists of distinguished supporters on the BHA and NSS websites. Dr Evan Harris and Lord Avebury are probably your go-to guys for all things atheist and ethical in Parliament

alak, there are actually quite a few outspoken non-religious MPs and Lords, compiling an accurate list would be a substantial task. You might find this discussion useful:

Here are some immediate events for the British including a splendid new television film this evening by atheist David attenborough:

Charles Darwin and the Tree of Life (Sunday 1 February, 9 pm, BBC1 TV).
It's fascinating on every front, a clear survey of a huge expanse of science and not to be missed.
There's one sequence in David Attenborough's masterly cruise through the history of life where he explains the development of the eye in animals. With beautiful briskness it stifles the old canard that Darwin's theory of natural selection can't explain how an organ as complex and 'designed' as an eye could evolve. For this one-off, the great communicator brings a lifetime of experience to bear on the story of Darwin's work and what we have learnt since about evolution. What makes the programme so captivating is not just the gentle clarity of Attenborough's style but the fact that he makes the story so personal. He reminisces about his fossil-collecting childhood and, via clips from his many series, we see not just dazzling creatures but also the "evolution" of Attenborough himself, from bright-eyed enthusiast to grey-haired sage. (Radio Times preview).

Darwin's Struggle: The Evolution of the Origin of Species (BBC4 TV, Monday 2 February, 9 pm). For 20 years after his return from the Galapagos islands, Charles Darwin observed all manner of life around him in Kent, including his own children, testing his ideas about evolution. This fine documentary tells Darwin's moving story.

Darwin & The Darwinian Controversy. A talk by Prof A C Grayling at Lord Hill Hotel, Shrewsbury, Wednesday 4 February 2009, 6.30pm. Full details. Booking form (pdf).

Did anyone hear Jonathan Bartley on Thought For The Afternoon? Wouldn't it be lovely if all Christians were like those level-headed people of Ekklesia? I actually thought he gave a more forceful non-religious message than Ariane Sherine

By the way, Hi. I'm a newbie. I used to be a bright but decided the Brights were getting too pally with religious groups for my liking. Glad to see a group of people dedicating themselves to atheism.

So now Sikhs and Hindus are accusing the BBC of bias towards Muslims. Be nice if they wanted all biases to be eradicated but, of course, they'll want as much of a bias towards them as other religions. It would be a first step towards the separation of church and state if the BBC could be separated from religion.

Today, in the Sunday times Minette Marrin said:

“There must be no public recognition of religious associations as representatives of anything or anybody: not on campuses, not in student unions, not in government consultations or in parliament.

So-called religious community leaders, or umbrella groups of religious bodies, must of course be free to associate as they like in private, in a free country, but publicly they must be ignored. Publicly they must not teach or promote illegal prejudices. Forced into the private sphere, denied the oxygen of publicity, power and influence, highly politicised religious groups will wither on the vine. Perhaps, in that wonderful phrase of Yeats, they might even wither into truth.”

There is no need for me to add anything. I agree totally.

Greetings everyone. Although I'm Italian and not a British citizen, I'm still going to spend nine months as an exchange student at Salford University starting in September, so I thought it might be a good idea to get to know the local reality a bit more. Any atheists from Greater Manchester and surrounding areas? ^^

I don't think that there's *anyone* who wouldn't think those sorts of things are clearly in the realm of a sexual proposition. The gray area is more like when potentially ordinary conversation goes on but is... kinda "friendly".

Exactly SGecko. I can't believe that we have to even come up with a straight-faced answer to whether or not there could have been a sudden global flood that covered everything. It's like having to give a straight-faced answer to "The moon is made ...

Why do I fight ? I fight for those that hate me. Because they are too weak to fight for themselves. They have the strength to hate, but not to fight. 1 in a 1000 gets over their hate. That is good enough for me.
