Welcome!

The mission of The Atheist Community of South Chicago Suburbs (ACSCS) is to develop and support the secular community, to provide atmosphere that promotes friendship, critical thought and information literacy. The ACSCS provides a place to hang out and meet new people and participate in Atheist Stuff. We provide a tolerant environment that facilitates critical discourse, freedom of dissent and critical problem solving where individuals are encouraged to be who they are. The ACSCS is committed to furthering the development of atheist stuff by holding a meetups at locations specified on the calender.

Frequently and Infrequently Asked Questions:
Q: Is atheism a religion?
A: No, the ACSCS is a book club without a book.

Q: Why should people come?
A: We have a lot of fun at meet-ups. Talking, and challenging various given’s in the world, and in ourselves and thinking atheist stuff.

Q: What do atheists do when they do whatever they do?
A: One thing atheist do is meet-up to do atheist stuff.
We define atheist stuff as; conversing, talking, arguing, disagreeing, and agreeing about various topics. These topics may include: Anything you want to say, anything somebody else wants to say, and something which happened in the world which speaks for itself. (Excluding; anything that dehumanizes, or is intended to be mean, cruel or generally not kind.)

Q: Who should come? Are newcomers welcome?
A: Yes all are welcome.

Q: What will it be like? A discussion?
A: Our Meet-ups vary depending on the mix of member, topics discussed and general state of the world. Oh there will be discussion!

Q: Do members need to bring anything?
A: Nope. Cash for coffee or a snack, as to not loiter, other than that you just need to bring yourself.

Q: How will members benefit from coming to your Meetup?
A: First, members will be able to participate in something new, an atheist group! Second, your participation may help other people feel normal by being part of a group!

Q: How long will the Meetup be?
A: To misquote Fight Club, “Atheist stuff will last as long as it needs to,” which is to say, as long as the venue is open. Closing time kicks us out into the street.

Q: Who shouldn't come?
A: People who don’t want to and people who aren’t willing to participate in Atheist stuff.

Q: What is information literacy?
A: The American Library Association's says: "To be information literate, a person must be able to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.

Q: Why is the ACSCS purposely using vague terms and concepts like “Atheist stuff”?
A: The ACSCS recognizes that there are multiple understandings of the words Atheist, and Atheist, and refuses to back as specific definition so as open the meet-up to a wider variety of members and understandings.

The Northwest Indiana meeting was pretty cool. And on the drive back i was trying to figure out why found it so enjoyable. Because they didn't do anything beyond other other groups I've visited. And then I figured it out, there were two married couples in the group. I think thats been the first time I've seen married people at a group.
Anyway, you can find this group at. http://www.meetup.com/Atheist-Community-of-Northwest-Indiana/calend...
Its a bit of a hike, but its worth it.

Oh I just finished.
40 Days and 40 Nights: Darwin, Intelligent Design, God, Oxycontin®, and Other Oddities on Trial in Pennsylvania
Its about the dover trial. It has some absolutely historical court transcripts. The book was apparently written by Darwin's great grandson. I didn't know much about the trial, out side of news articles before this.

And for the non-reader types there is supposed to be a documentary made by the same guy out there also.
