Richard Dawkins is speaking at a book store in Menlo Park on October 6. I have a minivan and I'd be happy to carpool if anyone wants to go.

There is a group of men handing out religious tracts and preaching the 'gospel' down at the wharf every Sunday. I'd like to organize a group of people who can go down and offer a different message: "You don't need god to be good to others", "There probably is no god, so stop worrying and enjoy your Chowder!" or "God doesn't talk to me, does that make me crazy?"

Hello Maria,

John told me of your interest and just wanted to welcome you to our skeptic group Monterey County Skeptics. As John mentioned we are still at the beginning of finding our way in the world of woo out there. We are not an Atheist Group, and want to avoid involving religion (at least when it does not try to make testable claims). Yet, for the most part I think most of us are non-believers. I also have children in your age category and am also a Grad student at SJSU (Masters not PhD) and would love to have you and your family attend one of our social functions.

At this moment we seem to be focusing on the social aspect of skepticism. This Saturday (Jan 24th) we are going to try and meet up with as many as possible. If you read our yahoo group site John gave you, you will see I'm pretty excited about a trip I had to Denver this week. I met up with a very active social Skeptic group as well as spent the day hanging out with the two founders of Rocky Mountain Paranormal Society, they took me to places they have investigated. I also hope to present some information on a group activity called Skepticamp.

Anyway, we have not yet set a time or place, but it will be in Monterey this Saturday. Watch our site for some information, again we are still new and not that organized yet. But we are all nice and fun people, and would love to have you and your family attend.

Hello Marina!

There is not a lot going on around here, but there are some groups you may find interesting. There is a Humanist group that I believe meets at the library on Wednesday evenings. They are at: http://hambamty.googlepages.com/

There is another humanist group in Carmel Valley. Our Skeptics group is on Facebook and at Yahoo groups - the link is above. I just joined about a week ago myself. We're not very active yet, but there is a blog at Montereycountyskeptics@blogspot.com, which I have begun contributing to.

There is, unfortunately, a lot of wacky woo-woo and consumer fraud going on in this area. We try to write Letters to the Editor when something comes up, and we're trying to find ways of becoming more active and useful. If you're interested, come on over to FB or Yahoo and join up.

John

"Happy Holidays is a good enough saying for anyone at Christmas time. I support the phrase "happy holidays" rather than the bullshit most Americans were taught. Let's go back in time to look at meanings here. "Holidays"…"
