Free Speech Atheists

This group is all about the freedom of expression, from an Atheist point of view. As the nonbelieving minority in a quasi-theocracy, it is essential to all we hold dear that our voices never fall silent.

Current Group Activities:

Hey all, We've moved to Virginia Beach... We are currently looking into setting up another meet up with everyone.  So keep coming back and post some thoughts.

Meet With US
TBA

**We have a carpool going so if you'd like to meet with us and enjoy a road trip, please let us know.**

Our Last Gathering:
Sept. 16, 2009

We met up with Richard Dawkins to hear his lecture on his new book,"The Greatest Show On Earth." As always, he was well spoken, educated, and humorous. After the lecture, we all gathered in a rather large line to get our favorite Dawkins books signed. It was well worth the trip.

All this followed by a nice dinner with like-minded friends. Thank you Matt L for informing us of the Dawkins lecture.

Not sure when we will be able to have our next meeting but check back for updates.

Je Suis Hypocrisy? Selective Free Speech and the Secular Inquisition in France

The brutal Paris attacks have been exploited to undermine the very right it's become an emblem for -- freedom of expression -- while details contradicting the official narrative are suppressed. This article examines the selective defence of free speech in the aftermath, and how the French government's long-running crackdown on alternative spirituality violates the principle of liberty it claims to uphold.

Why Doesn't Pope Francis Support Freedom of Speech?

In his remarks about the tragic massacre of certain journalists in Paris recently, Pope Francis did not support freedom of speech. Patrick Callahan, professor emeritus of political science at DePaul University, a Catholic university, has examined the official social teachings of the Roman Catholic Church approved by the bishops. They have not approved teaching that freedom of speech and association are civil rights. Why not?

It's Religious Freedom, Stupid! The Christian Right Relies On Congress To Push It's Latest Strategy.

"Religious Freedom" is the main strategy of today's Christian Right - and it's election of Republicans.

Attack on Academic Freedom Redux

The Salaita case is not the only recent attempt to intimidate academics critical of Israel. An organization calling itself AMCHA ("your people" in Hebrew) and purporting to work for the "protection of Jewish students" has posted a list of over 200 professors who support the boycott of Israel. They too have been judged anti-Semitic and Jewish students are urged by the organization to avoid their classes.

REV, all arguments aside I want you well brother. I cant imagine suffering such pain in the testicles or the penis. I put a high value on a good sex life. And you are being deprived of that by this injury. Are you being treated by a different doctor now?

Meetup at a burning man festival - that would be cool.

For once, instead of having the big everyone-fly-in-from-everywhere gathering in some major city, I think we should have it in some off the wall, remote place. Like the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Of course, no bias at all just because I live in an off the wall/way-far-from-any-major-city location. :-P

Jaqueline,

Being a sufferer of PVPS (Post Vasectomy Pain Sydrome) I fully understand! It has greatly reduced by sex life since I got it done, though things have gotten better (pain-wise, at least) recently. That said, I just couldn't grasps what it was like before this. It's one thing to read about others suffering. It's a whole nother ball game (pardon the pun) to actually go through it! The point being, you can't blame men too much for not understanding. Without going through something comparable, we just don't know.

Again, let me show you our pain in our support group:

Mary,

Most of the members of the original FSA (yahoo) live in places that are so far apart it's inconvenient, to say the least, to meet in person. That's why we meet online. It's not really a big deal. We can still have great conversations! We just can't physically interact.

SGecko,

It's not that we're a minority of men. It's that it happens, at all, and that these money hungry doctors don't fully list the potential risks that slicing your nutsack open and cutting tubes in there entails. The fact of the matter is that you should view this horrific, torturous procedure for what it is before you get it: a loaded gun pointed straight at your genitals. Spin the chamber, pull the trigger and hope for the best. Maybe you'll fall into the majority and you'll get an empty chamber. But what if you don't? What if you spin and pull and the gun goes off? Do you really think these fucking statistics matter even the slightest to you?!!! Actually, they make things soooooooooooooooo much worse!!! Because now, not only are you in terrible pain, but you have this overbearing feeling of unfairness and raging jealousy to deal with!
