...ever the "Jehovas witnesses" versions ? they seem to update the end of the world every decade or so, wonder, what will be the next "day X" ?

I highly recommend Apocalypses: Prophecies, Cults, and Millennial Beliefs through the Ages by Eugen Weber. It was very useful to me as I was deprogramming from my religious past.

Jimmo,
My purpose of the group was to gather somewhat of a database of the false prophecies -- as reference material for people. My only fear of discussing real scenarios is that the false prophecies would get lost in your discussion (since I think it's a big topic). But otherwise, I'm not opposed. Maybe you could start a new Discussion "Rational based predictions"... and everyone could reply via threads to it. This would keep the two separate and not drown out the references to false prophecies.

Would it be acceptable to also include reason-based speculation on how the world-as-we-know-it WILL end (both near-term climate change/social upheaval as well as longer-term planetary evolution...)?
