Appeal to Freethinkers to Fight Cancer

With a goal of raising $1 million, Foundation Beyond Belief (FBB) is proud to announce they are now a "Special Friend" team partner with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) for their Light The Night Walks. They will be the rallying point around which local freethought, atheist, and secular humanist groups will form teams to participate in Light the Night Walks.

Framing Humanism, or How to Win the Culture War

By Andy Norman

When you self-identify as a humanist, you assume certain risks. For example, a frightened fundamentalist may seek to scapegoat you for the secularizing effects of modernity.  This risk is specific to humanism, but other risks are generic. Any label can be used to typecast someone—that much goes with the territory—but there is another, more potent risk. When you share the news that you’re a humanist, people are apt to respond by asking “What’s that?” If you don’t have a coherent and ready answer, you look inarticulate and superficial. Aware of this risk, billions of humanists avoid daily opportunities to self-identify, thereby bypassing wonderful opportunities to discuss and promote our cause. This “identity-avoidance” is a very real phenomenon, and it could be our movement’s biggest obstacle.

You can read the rest of Andy Norman's most recent article in his Brainstormin' series from Humanist Network News here.

In this month's episode of the Humanist Hour, Jes Constantine heads to Cranston, RI to hear the local residents, students, and teachers voice their opinion about the Cranston High School West prayer banner. Also, listen to Ellery Schempp tell the story of his landmark US Supreme Court case from over 50 years ago, ruling government sanctioned prayer unconstitutional.

Hosts Jes Constantine and Todd Stiefel also discuss the recent announcement that Foundation Beyond Belief is now a "Special Friend" team partner with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) for their Light The Night Walks. The goal is to unite the Freethought Movement around the world to raise one million U.S. Dollars in 2012. This would make us the first team in LLS history to bring in more than $1,000,000 in their first year!

Humanist literature now available for new military enlistees

New enlistees are exposed to an imposing new culture as they enter the military. For decades, the Gideons have been treating them to a good Christian introduction. Good for the Gideons for taking care of their people. For the first time, enlistees will see that it’s ok if you’re not Christian. Humanist enlistees now have access to “Living Well Through Secular Humanism,” a publication of the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers introducing humanism as a positive, science-based, and ethical life stance for nontheists.

Take Action: Tell Your Senators to Oppose the Blunt Amendment!

The US Senate is set to consider an amendment that would make all health plans subject to the religious whims of employers. Use our link below to inform your Senators of your opposition.

I just started a petition to have Judge Mark Martin investigated for judicial misconduct for ignoring evidence of an attack by a Muslim on an atheist: https://www.change.org/petitions/judicial-conduct-board-of-pennsylv...

If you haven't heard about the story yet: religion.blogs.cnn.com/2012/02/28/judges-dismissal-of-atheists-harassment-claim-against-muslim-makes-waves/

Please share this petition.

The Truth About America's Religious Heritage

Religious conservatives often disingenuously claim governmental references to God are merely to "acknowledge our religious heritage." AHA president David Niose takes a close look at that heritage in his Psychology Today blog.

From the latest Humanist Network News, comedian and atheist Troy Conrad writes a hilarious piece on his time as a Scientologist. (They really do hate aspirin, believe in Xenu, and work for no money.)
