AHA Updates

Humanist Press is the publishing house of the American Humanist Association, providing material for the humanist/freethought/atheist market since 1995.

With the largest print book seller in the United States now selling more ebooks than paper books, it was time the freethought movement invested in the future of publishing so that we can remain relevant and accessible to readers in the U.S. and around the globe.

With new ebooks becoming available on a bi-monthly basis, Humanist Press will have a regularly expanding catalog of interest to atheist and agnostic humanists everywhere. Visit HumanistPress.com

Take Action: Tell Your Senators to Oppose the Blunt Amendment!

The US Senate is set to consider an amendment that would make all health plans subject to the religious whims of employers. Use our link below to inform your Senators of your opposition.

I just started a petition to have Judge Mark Martin investigated for judicial misconduct for ignoring evidence of an attack by a Muslim on an atheist: https://www.change.org/petitions/judicial-conduct-board-of-pennsylv...

If you haven't heard about the story yet: religion.blogs.cnn.com/2012/02/28/judges-dismissal-of-atheists-harassment-claim-against-muslim-makes-waves/

Please share this petition.

The Truth About America's Religious Heritage

Religious conservatives often disingenuously claim governmental references to God are merely to "acknowledge our religious heritage." AHA president David Niose takes a close look at that heritage in his Psychology Today blog.

From the latest Humanist Network News, comedian and atheist Troy Conrad writes a hilarious piece on his time as a Scientologist. (They really do hate aspirin, believe in Xenu, and work for no money.)

On Sunday afternoon (between 12 and 1 EST), AHA president David Niose will be on the Fox News Channel to discuss the equal protection lawsuit challenging "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance. This should be interesting!!

The NYC event for the Day of Solidarity for Black Non-Believers will be in Harlem. In fact the next closes promoted events are in D.C and Philadelphia. So this is serving the whole Tri-State (NY,NY & CT) area.

We're putting a special twist on our usual Mind Food + "Soul Food" combo. The details will interest you!

CFI-Harlem/Harlem Humanists will be gathering on Sunday February 26th to celebrate Day of Solidarity for Black Non-believers. This is a time to get together and enjoy bright minds and warm personalities. There's a noble story of freethought from within the African American and Pan-African tradition. This is a chance to connect with this tradition and each other. We'll begin at 1pm. The place is 583 Riverside Dr. in the "Brick Room". It's free. Just e-mail (harlem@centerforinquiry.net) or call (646-820-CFIH) for all the details." RSVP if you can.

See you there. Regardless, please share this in the next two days with all you think will be interested.

Were These U.S. Presidents Really Humanists?

Steve Major, the development associate for the AHA, explores the potential humanism of U.S. presidents.

How many humanist presidents have there already been? Officially, zero.

All 44 United States Presidents have claimed, in one form or another, to be Christian. Alas, even during the era of our nation’s founding fathers, in which reason was held up as one of mankind’s highest ideals, the voting public has largely agreed that electing a non-theist would be morally identical to raising Osama bin Laden from the dead and proclaiming him our emperor.
