Joan, thanks for the compliment and the support you’re shown me.  I’m pushing 70 so let me offer some avuncular advice.  Every now and then, you might come upon a situation where you say to yourself:  “No human being could possibly be that stupid.”  I mean… if someone writes or says:

If rich people pay less taxes, that means they’ll have more money two hire mades, cooks, chauffeurs and don’t forget illegal Mexicans to mow the lawn.  Their people two, ya know?

That should be a red flag.

Consider the logic of it.  Rich people should be allowed to pay lower tax rates so they can hire more servants, thus lowering the unemployment rate.  You’d have to be some sort of brain-washed Catholic to think that way.  And the bit about the illegal aliens.  With all the problems this country has, this asshole is worried about these invaders finding jobs mowing lawns. Would you want to support five kids by mowing lawns?  It wouldn’t pay to get up in the morning.  And the rich people act like they’re doing you a favor by hiring you at minimum wage.

To me, it’s so stupid it’s funny.

Post script:  there’s a whole chapter in Mirror Reversal written in that discombobulated, confusing style.  Advertising tycoon, Meara Sniffington Meyer says:  “Dat’s not hippocritical, dare’s absolutely nothin’ wrong wit’ givin’ cash ta uddas less fortunate.”

I wrote this stuff four years ago and I still get a laugh out of it.

Good, respectful penetrating interview:

Nate Phelps is the son of Fred Phelps, infamous pastor of Kansas' Westboro Baptist Church, an entity which asserts that "God Hates Fags," that President Obama is the AntiChrist, and that the terrorist attacks of 9/11 were God's punishment upon the United States.

Susan Stanko, Thanks for the heads-up. I was careless and didn't make the connection when I read the attachment.

Just in time for back-to-school activities, the AHA's Kochar Humanist Education Center has a new website!

Please visit (and share with your friends) the resources available, including an extensive library of curriculum resources for teachers; the Many Faces of Humanism online course; lesson plans for children; adult education manual; information on the Humanist Teacher Corps (including how to join); the Ten Commitments, providing a moral foundation for education, and more!

I am 76 years old; how will I spend the remaining days of my life?

Will I submit to habits of the past and build shields against fear, pain and anger that filled my life and perpetuate into future thoughts that I am weak and powerless over events in my life?

Or will I create habits of cynicism allowing me to remain in the known and familiar, vulnerable, weak and afraid?

Or will I risk creating new habits focused on future hopes and aspirations while claiming my strength, power, and gratitude for being alive and participating in wonder of life, lived fully.

I am afraid, but fear is a familiar emotion and I can transform it into energy of regeneration and renewal.

What will it cost me if I fail? Rejection? Criticism? Judgment? Oh! Those also are familiar emotions.

Something births within me; life’s force surges to move me beyond the fear of men I love. I claim my right to live, to breath, to drink in rich nectar of being, of doing those things that I am particularly good at, and especially enjoy. I can forgive myself for not being perfect; that I am perfectly imperfect and I am enough.

Death of a family member

Posted by Larry Taylor on May 20, 2013 at 6:15pm 1 Comment

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…

Unbelievable!!!!!!!!

This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.

I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…

anti-atheist rant from an Orthodox Mormon part 2

What do you think of this,

Nathan Young,

No Jason Torpy it is you that should be banned for promoting atheism, a belief that has no foundation in reality and zero proof behind it.  The letter was a mockery of your atheist beliefs.  I request to the board here that they remove Jason for his unverifiable beliefs in atheism for which he has no proof other than his arrogance.  The letter was a mockery of atheism.  Atheism is stupid and it should be mocked and it…

Anti-atheist post from an Orthdox Mormon

What do you think of this Facebook comment?

Nathan Young to Jason Torpy,

for once you and I can agree on something.  We should disrespect beliefs that are untenable such as the belief that there is no God.  Indeed for me to respect you Jason, I cannot respect your belief in non-belief in atheism.  Your atheism comes across as arrogrance, smugness, and self righteous.  Indeed after reading "An Open Letter to My Religious Friends" I penned one…
