Atheist Nexus

The World’s Largest Coalition of Nontheists and Nontheist Communities!

Hey guys, I joined this place about a month ago but I haven't quite introduced myself yet. My name is Nate and I'm a young atheist. I'm starting a nontheism/atheism club over at my school and I really want to try and tell people that if they have doubts in religion, they're not alone. I am against religion as a lifestyle, especially in people my age.

As for my religious background, mine is a little different. My dad is a somewhat orthodox Jew and my mom, despite a Jewish background, considers herself agnostic. I used to go to synagogue often as a young child but I honestly didn't understand why people just wanted to devote their lives to something you can't even prove.

I slowly drifted away from religion and I was confused as to what my choices were. Someone (I don't remember who) mentioned Atheism one day, and out of curiosity I looked up the term, and I decided that I wanted to be an Atheist.

My parents weren't very happy with me at first and they told me that I was sad because I didn't have any faith. My dad tried to force me into having a Bar Mitzvah and made me go back to synagogue a few times, until he finally just decided that "I'd find faith someday". I was just glad he was (sort of) letting me choose my own path. My mom accepted it for the most part and just told me that having your own opinion is more important than following something just because someone told you to.

As for now, I consider myself a "medium" atheist (for the lack of a better word). I'm trying to get a program started at my school for people who have doubts in religion. I also listen to a lot of Atheist podcasts (Chariots of Iron, Atheist News, Reasonable Doubts, etc.)

So yeah, that's my religious background in a nutshell. Sorry for the huge wall of text. For those of you who read it all, I congratulate you. Have a godless cookie.

Welcome Nate. Congratulations on being atheist. Now what? Kidding. The thing that struck me was your perception that your post was a huge wall of text? Compared to what? Are you not aware of books? kidding again. This perception struck me because you are apparently a "blackberry kid" as it were. I was a blackberry kid when the term referred to edible berries. I have never owned any sort of PDA other than my desktop computer. Best wishes on getting your school program going.
:P I don't own a blackberry, but I think I understand what you mean to an extent.
Thanks! :D I'm just trying to help other kids be open-minded and have a choice as to what they believe.
I will take that cookie and eat it up... Yum.

Good luck with the club, and welcome to the nexus.
Welcome Nate..
Several of us are of a different generation here and don't start to fall asleep after 140 characters. Feel free to write as much as you want...I didn't consider your post to be too long at all, sometimes nuance deserves a few paragraphs...thanks for the cookie.
