I am constantly bothered by christian Youtubers who post ignorant videos claiming to have proof that their mythical slave masters exist? So, I looked up the word "evolution" and asked them what it meant. The definition I read online says that evolution is the gradual change of an organism over a long period of time through stimuli. The christians I asked were instantly offended stating that evolution is a false idea that says we decended from monkeys. I'm obviously not very educated on the subject and have a few questions on the matter.
#1 Is the definition I stated correct
#2 If evolution is gradual change from stimuli, could domesticated animals prove this
#3 If evolution is not fact, how can all of the early man fossils possibly be explained
I was kind of wondering about the positive and negative stimuli. Meaning, is breeding a specific type of animal in captivity concidered a kind of forced evolution? If this isn't the same as evolution then, what qualifies as evolution? I have heard people say that evolution is seen when the evolved species will not breed naturally with the unevolved. If so then does that mean that the two species won't naturally breed or can they not be bred even in a lab? The reason I ask is because domesticated animals seem to me to fit that criteria but, maybe I'm wrong! I doubt anyone has ever seen a Puma gettin it on with a domestic Siamese cat..............sounds very violent!!!
All right, I stand corrected. But, are these cats being bred in a lab or can the wild cats breed naturally with the domestic cats................or does it even matter according to the scientific definition of evolution?
Darwin called animal breeding by humans "artificial selection." If humans can alter the characteristics of a species through selective breeding, then so can nature, albeit with different selection criteria. Google "ligers," Napoleon Dynamite's favorite animal.
Thanks! Doonesbury often hit the nail on the head.
I found the comic strip in still form, and an interesting relevant tidbit about Garry Trudeau's great-grandfather, on the blog "Twisted Bacteria": "'Hope he's only a Sunday creationist' by G. Trudeau".
Hi Ronnie. I'm a former Pentecostal and discussions with my religionist friend had him up in arms asking if I believed in evolution. They all believe that evolutionists think we came from monkeys. Your definition of gradual change caused by various stimuli is more correct.
Here is what I asked my friend who does not believe evolution:
1. Explain the existence of wisdom teeth.
2. Explain the function of the appendix.
My friend changed the subject, but the die hard idiots will try to explain everything away through christian "reasoning." I even have a friend who thinks that rabbits really do "chew the cud" just because the buybull said so.
#2 If evolution is gradual change from stimuli, could domesticated animals prove this.
I long ago concluded that cosmic ray strikes caused mutations and mutations explained evolution.
To that I've added that copying errors can occur when DNA strands join, and copying errors might be fatal.
Many microorganisms are domesticated (grown in labs) and I understand they evolve very quickly.
on a somewhat related note, my best friend recently told me he's been reading quite a bit about evolution recently. we've discussed the topic before but his newfound interest excited me. he's agnostic, btw. but after he started talking a little bit i grew increasingly concerned. then he said the magic words - "micro and macro" evolution. as soon as he said that i knew what he had been reading.
i'll admit that i wouldn't make a very good teacher. i have little patience for ignorance and tried my best to explain to him that what he's reading may sound very scientific but it most certainly is not.
he went on to say that he has some issues with the difference between evolution and adaptation. i tried to explain to him that he's using improper definitions of both words. he thought that adaptation was short term changes and evolution is longer. obviously this is incorrect. their is no time frame for evolution - it's an ongoing and constant process.
the point is there is enough misinformation out there, and much of it sounding highly technical and scientific, to give doubts to even non-religious folks who simply aren't educated on the subject. evolution is my absolute favorite thing in the world. it troubles me that my friend is being mislead by this propoganda and i feel powerless to stop it. i'll keep on fighting though!
One of the more recent additions to the evidence for evolution is the discovery within the human genome of endogenous retroviruses. If I recall correctly at least one of these viruses—called Phoenix— was reconstructed from the human genome and rendered functional. These are the remnants of ancient infections by viruses that became part of the human genome. it is very difficult to see why God would have created humans with endogenous retroviruses, but that has not stopped creationists from trying. It is estimated that about 8% of the human genome consists of these fossil retroviruses and they may have played a large role in evolution.
Here is one place to read about these fossil viral elements:
and here is an article detailing the fascinating history of their discovery:
An example of the biblical version of evolution can be found here Genesis 30:37-42.
they mated in front of the (white) branches. And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted.
Today's theory of evolution was started by Darwin. And Wikipedia's opening definition is pretty good.
Evolution is the change in the inherited characteristics of biological populations over successive generations.
My favorite interpretation of evolution is Mr Garrison's interpretation. Also at Youtube.
evolution is the gradual change of an organism over a long period of time through stimuli.
My explanation of evolution in as few words as possible would be:
Every generation is different from it's parents generation. This difference is usually slight. (We are all mutants)
This difference may give advantages and/or disadvantages to living long enough to breed within a particular environment.
If you successfully breed, the new generation will be different again. And it may or may not have advantages and/or disadvantages to live long enough to breed.
The best examples of Darwinian evolution in action come from the over use of antibiotics.
Eg. Penicillin works by hampering the building of new cell walls in bacteria when bacteria reproduces. Penicillin prevents bacteria cell walls being built because of an enzyme called β-Lactam. But some new mutant strains of bacteria produce an enzyme called Beta-lactamase, and this enzyme prevents β-Lactam from doing its thing. I haven't looked into the chemical structure of Beta-lactamase, but it's most probably very similar to some other enzyme that the bacteria already produces.
