What religion has contributed to the world this month - Special Report #6: The Victims of Male Circumcision

Over the years, the news has tattooed our ears with the travesty which is female genital mutilation.  But what about MEN, and what about the seemingly routine process of male circumcision?  The following video suggests that what some think of as routine may not be quite so.

Are these a vast minority of cases?  Of course they are.  Still, the question is still begged: for a procedure which, with rare exceptions, is utterly unnecessary, Why Is It Done So Often?

The answer, as it is too often, is Religion.

Thanks for posting this video Loren. Yes, what about male circumcision? Religion is the cause of this unnecessary procedure.

That video is pretty horrific.

I can't figure out why health plans cover circumcisions in the US.  As Steph states, it's completely unnecessary.

It's also a violation of the body of the child being circumcised.

Pathetic custom.

But - but - but ... like Tevye said ... it's "TRADITION!!!!"

To which I say, "Yeah ... so was slavery."

I was cut when I was 4, at the same time when they yanked my tonsils. I have not yet forgiven my mother for having me mutilated. I am now 72.

According to the Mayo Clinic,

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says the benefits of circumcision outweigh the risks. However, the AAP doesn't recommend routine circumcision for all male newborns. The AAP leaves the circumcision decision up to parents — and supports use of anesthetics for infants who have the procedure.

Circumcision might have various health benefits, including:

  • Easier hygiene. Circumcision makes it simpler to wash the penis. Washing beneath the foreskin of an uncircumcised penis is generally easy, however.
  • Decreased risk of urinary tract infections. The overall risk of urinary tract infections in males is low, but these infections are more common in uncircumcised males. Severe infections early in life can lead to kidney problems later on.
  • Decreased risk of sexually transmitted infections. Circumcised men might have a lower risk of certain sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. Still, safe sexual practices remain essential.
  • Prevention of penile problems. Occasionally, the foreskin on an uncircumcised penis can be difficult or impossible to retract (phimosis). This can lead to inflammation of the foreskin or head of the penis.
  • Decreased risk of penile cancer. Although cancer of the penis is rare, it's less common in circumcised men. In addition, cervical cancer is less common in the female sexual partners of circumcised men.

I'm not advocating for male circumcision, since some men were psychologically damaged by it - just saying there may be benefits.

Even if those points are true, parents or anyone else should not have the right to decide whether or not a child should be circumcised. It is not their body.

On top of everything else, get a load of what is going on in Israel regarding male circumcision:

those subtitles are amazing!

This came about in a divorce case, where the father changed his mind and decided he wanted the boy circumcised. The mother's appeal of the original rabbinical court's decision was denied, and she now intends to take the case to the Supreme Court.

From Haaretz (registration required):

In their decision to deny the woman's appeal, the judges, rabbis Tzion Boaron, Masoud Elhadad and Shmuel Shahor, wrote: “If the mother is given the opportunity to prevent the circumcision or use her objection [to the procedure] as a tool to make headway in the divorce struggle, we could find ourselves facing a flood of cases like these, and then divorce proceedings will take on a terrifying dimension. This trend must be stopped immediately for the common good, which takes precedence over that of the individual.”

Elsewhere in the ruling, the judges wrote: “Removal of the foreskin prepares the soul [of the baby] to accept the yoke of Heaven and study God’s Torah and commandments.”

Yet another reason Israel needs civil marriage and divorce, as opposed to giving those powers to religious authorities!

No wonder Israel is one big nuthouse! The normal people have fled by now.

Absolutely!  I hear the words, "religious court" and I cringe!

New non-surgical do-it-yourself circumcision device about to be marketed in Africa.

I think the general idea is similar to tying a thread around a skin tag to strangle it.  A little more elaborate than that, but similar concept.

" the easy-to-use and portable device is put on the penis for a period of seven days and removed thereafter, and throughout the procedure there would be no blood, no sutures and no injected anaesthesia as opposed to surgical male circumcision."

Circumcision is being promoted in Africa as a way to reduce HIV infection.  I guess because condoms, which would work better, are sinful.  And also cost money, take some planning, and reduce sensation.  Nothing is easy.
