I was thinking about taking a yellow marker to mark up some key disgusting bible passages in the gideon bibles I find, but there are so many. I might be up all night doing that. What do you suggest?

Permalink Reply by Denicio DelToro yesterday I have taken a bible or two and folded several pages so when the next occupant opens it, it goes to those pages. The pages I select are some of the deeds of JC and GOD. I circle them not with a sharpie but with a ball point pen..and I do it firmly, again to create an indent in the pages. Then I add a bit of commentary on the side...normally not in statement form, but in question form. Creating questions might cause someone to think!
Then I take to the covers and add some thoughtful questions there too.
I'll often go to John 3:16 and ask, "Was this a suicide of a triune god, or was this involuntary manslaughter of a careless father?
Permalink Reply by Loren Miller yesterday Not suicide at all ... just a temporary inconvenience to an eternal creature to whom no permanent harm could have come anyway. The sacrifice was only from a limited human point of view. To Haysus, it was more like doing without your smart-phone for a couple days.

Permalink Reply by Debra Stevenson yesterday I really don't care about the Gideon Bible's any more than I care for the New World Translation which is the JW's version of the Jewish and Christian texts and a stupid one at that. Accurate in language but I still don't see evidence for the JW's 'earthly paradise' or that the 'great crowd' are an earthly group. I don't know much about the Gideonite denomination.

Permalink Reply by Roy yesterday If you’ve stayed in a hotel it’ll be more than likely that you found a Bible in your dresser drawer and a note saying “this Bible was put here by a Gideon”; but who the fuck was Gideon? Here’s a few fun facts about the guy you may not know.
Read the Bible for yourself. You will find the story of Gideon in Judges, chapters 6-9. The tale of Gideon is only one of many horror stories in the Bible, a book that glorifies genocide, slavery, homophobia and sexism.

Gideon was a Jewish man in the stories from the Jewish bible, I am familar with it. I said I don't know much about Gideon denomination. Not the story. Actually it's the authors' of the texts who are glorifying genocide, homophobia, slavery, sexism , transphobia, religious intolerance and blood-sacrifice , not the books themselves.

Permalink Reply by Roy yesterday The Gideons are not really a denomination. It's an evangelical Christian organization and members can come from several different denominations. I just posted that info above because it's about the same as the stickers that are sold by ffrf to put inside the Gideon bibles. I didn't realize it had that swear word in there. I don't think that kind of language helps anything.
Permalink Reply by Debra Stevenson yesterday Roy,
Really? I was sure there were a denomination. Are they a seperate fundamentalist Christian movement that were formerly within the larger evangelical fundamentalist Christian movement? Or are they pretty much apart of the mainstream evangelical fundamentalist Christian movement? I thought most fundamentalist evangelical Christians preferred the King James Version of the two texts? Gideon in the stories of the Jewish bible is kind of a warlord I think. That's how I view him. Not a very tolerant figure.
No doubt the Gideon Bible printing company are owned by fundamentalists. A character , a Jewish character they named their company after no less. Gideon killed the pagans for worshipping their gods whom the Jews didn't believe 'existed' or may have been 'worshipped' over Yahweh. He made a priestly garment from the dead bodies of his victims. Sounds like Ed Gein. Do you know who Ed Gein was, Roy? He was the inspiration for three vicious serial killers from three of the most beloved films in the horror genre. He inspired Norman Bates from " Psycho", Leatherface from " The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and Buffalo Bill from " The Silence of the Lambs". Ed Gein's mother was a vert peculiar fundamentalist Lutheran whose beliefs were more bizarre than what most fundamentalists members of the more fanatical branches of the Lutheran denomination beleive. Gideon had his biological son wipe out many of his step siblings and tormented and murdered anyone who dare make fun of him.
Augusta Gein, Ed Gein's mother believed that all women except for herself were whores that were working for the 'devil'. She had a vicious hatred towards her own husband and two sons and read passages from the Jewish bible that referenced 'divine' punishment and death. A true religious nutcase that Augusta Gein was. I'm sure there were and still and are people like her in the world but they largely keep out of sight. She belonged in a mental hospital if you ask me. I hope nothing I said offened you, Roy.
