Christian theology is baseless nonesense. Well, of course it is unless you are one of those people who believe in, or cannot dismiss the supernatural. A super nature* does not exist. Therefore reading the bible is a complete waste of time and about as much use as reading Thucydides Peloponnesian Wars.

Idiots who say the bible is the word of god are obviously deluded so vulnerable people should be protected from their pernicious influence. The best way to deal with these idiots is to avoid and ignore them as much as possible and only confront them where necessary.

However when confrontation occurs you have to break those shit-heads in two. Hit them with knowledge and rational thinking and don't piddle about with theological arguments.

In case you haven't read it, I really recommend Thomas Paine's "The Age of Reason". I believe the above quote is from that.

Thomas Paine was raised as a Quaker and was a Deist at the time of writing 'The Age of Reason' in the late 18th century. The book is still published today. I won't be reading it. Deism is fundamentally flawed and it's conclusions are wrong. Here is Thomas Paines personal creed from the book; '

I believe in one God, and no more; and I hope for happiness beyond this life.

I believe in the equality of man; and I believe that religious duties consist in doing justice, loving mercy, and endeavouring to make our fellow-creatures happy.

But, lest it should be supposed that I believe many other things in addition to these, I shall, in the progress of this work, declare the things I do not believe, and my reasons for not believing them.

I do not believe in the creed professed by the Jewish Church, by the Roman Church, by the Greek Church, by the Turkish Church, by the Protestant Church, nor by any church that I know of. My own mind is my own church.

All national institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions, set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit.

I do not mean by this declaration to condemn those who believe otherwise; they have the same right to their belief as I have to mine. True enuf all that Objectivly speaking theology is no different de Greek, Worse, or Egyptian mythology. And the questions they debate are of no more significance than under what circumstances Thor could beat Odin in a fight

Even reading the bible as a storybook is awful. Not good stories, not good writing. We had to read some of it in high school and the teacher called it "the bible as literature". Some literature.

Right on booklover! I have been trying to read some of the bible as "stories" or "literature" but in a word it: sucks! No wonder they give this book away for free! who would pay money for it?

Why do you continue to read the bible when you know it sucks ? Aren't you curious to know who you are and where you come from ? I can recommend Alice Roberts 'The incredible Human Journey' which was made into a television series and is now viewable in full on YouTube. We are Homosapiens who existed in small numbers in Africa from about one hundred to two hundred thousand years ago. An incredibly short period of time considering that the Dinosaurs have been extinct for over sixty million years. We only emmigrated from Africa within the last approximately sixty thousand years. We only arrived in Europe about forty thousand years ago and America about ten thousand years ago. The world is so old and we are so young.

There are now over 6.6 billion of us and we are becoming parasitic on our small planet with finite resources. The future is uncertain for us at present.

I personally never continued reading the bible. I couldn't get through it if I tried it is so inane. I also think it's funny that there are racists when we all started from the same people in the same area which was,yes, Africa. I happen to think we were a mistake... :)

Oh, it's not like I only read the bible... I love Alice Roberts and the incredible human journey. What a great show. I wish programming in this backward theocracy we call the USA was that good. Instead we get ghost hunters and paranormal crap pseudo science. Just to clarify, I read it like I would read anything else. I hate "Crime and Punishment" and think that it is worse than going to the dentist. How would I be able to know that unless I read it? We take the good with the bad and move on. Looking to get answers out of me? Read me some Dostoevsky!
