Theists trust atheists more when reminded of government

Atheists have the lowest social acceptance in the US of any group. Why are we so despised? The authors suggest it comes down to theists distrusting us because we don't submit to God surveillance.

... dislike mostly comes from distrust.

...believers think atheists' absence of belief is a public threat to cooperation and honesty. However, this negative perception of atheists declines to the extent that people are reminded of secular means of social surveillance."

People want the world to be orderly and controlled, but it seems like the authority that keeps people in line can be religious or secular. There's some evidence that when people feel less confident in their government, they're more likely to seek out religion. Norenzayan and Gervais find that in countries where the government is more effective and stronger, atheists are both more common and more trusted.

Yet another indicator of cognitive dissonance.  If any of these fuckers can be bothered to shed the shackles which bind their cognitive processes and recognize what is rational and reasonable and what is irrational and unreasonable, maybe ... just maybe they can begin to understand their own irrationality and work against it.

I refuse to turn blue for waiting, however.

Are you sure, Loren? I think you'd look good in blue. ;-)

Oh, I WEAR blue very well ... but skin tone like the Na'Vi?!?  Nope, don't think so, thankuverymuch!

I just love your replies Loren!~ Melinda  (I totally agree too!)
