Franklin Graham, Billy's successor apparent in the Graham ministries, tells us more about himself than either the Christian or Islamic faith when he tells CNN: "[Islam] is a very evil and wicked religion.  True Islam cannot be practiced in this country. You cannot beat your wife.  You cannot murder your children if you think they've committed adultery or something like that, which they do practice in these other countries."

The first thing we learn about Graham from reading such a statement is that he is an idiot.  He is not even fully literate.  Ignoring the reduncancy of calling the Islamic faith evil and wicked, he obviously never learned the proper use of referents.  When you says, "You" as in "You cannot beat your wife," is he referring to a prohibition on wife beating under Christianity or Islam?  In a way, it doesn't really matter, since neither faith has a monopoly on spousal smacking.  Some of the most devout Christians beat their wives, just as devout Muslims do.  In fact, Christianity encourages wife smacking almost as much as does Islam.  If a woman can be nothing more but a "help mate" to her husband, she is for all practical purposes his slave, a mere chattel.  If Graham means that no democratic (small "d") American cannot beat his wife, then why is it we still have states, mostly in the South, where wife beating is still legal?

The second thing we learn about Graham is that he is completely ignorant of what the Islamic faith permits and condemns, ergo: "...something like that...."  He has heard some rumor or suggestion that Muslim men are permitted to murder their children under some circumstances, so it must be so.  But maybe he got it wrong somehow, so it now becomes "something like that."  Maybe Muslims only get to spank their children if the children commit adultery.  Graham is being disingenuous and not a little hypocritical.  He condemns many of the same things Muslims do, including homosexuality.  After all, the prohibitions and stimatizations of both Christianity and Islam derive from the same ancient desert tribal injunctions. Laws set down sometime between 1,400 and 400 B.C.E.

You know somebody is a real loser if the Pentagon tells him to say away from a prayer breakfast.

And yet the President is compelled to visit his senile father for more of this kind of inspirational wisdom. God Bless America.
