The most important lesson from 83,000 brain scans: Daniel Amen at TEDxOrangeCoast

Working at the boys' ranches, one of my colleagues coined the term, "dyslogic". There was no train of thought that preceded behavior that we could detect. "Why did that kid do ...?" "What was he thinking?" One of my jobs was to train a boy and his parents how to work together, to communicate, solve problems and resolve conflicts. It generally wasn't very difficult to do and I had many success stories.

One case in particular occurred when a fine little boy was placed at the boys' ranch by juvenile court because of acting out. I gave him, his father and mother, instructions on how to resolve conflict and they all performed beautifully !!! until the mother realized she was losing control of her husband and child and they functioned very well together. She shot her husband in front of the boy!. Blood was everywhere, the boy was traumatized and I had a new set of challenges with him. Thankfully, the father survived and was not seriously injured. The bullet woke him up to the realization that his wife was seriously troubled and a threat to their family. He filed charges against her with the intent of forcing her to go into treatment. Between the psychiatrist, physicians, lawyer and judge, a solution was planned and put into effect that resulted in a happy ending for all. I wish I had a brain scan pre- and post-treatment of the mother.

I agree with both you and Daniel Amen here. The short video brings out some valid points and gives much to think about. Therapy needs to go through a lot of changes. Erickson was a good therapist but we learned so much more since his days. Mental problems can be solved. They do not need to be demonized.
