Studies have shown that Atheists know more about the religious tenets and the “holy” books of religions as well as their history than do the faithful. As such, Atheist are, very likely, more capable of evaluating this scenario than the believers.
The scenario is:
There is the possibility, albeit a slim one, that we might discover intelligent life elsewhere in the galaxy or be contacted by the same in this century. Should that occur how do you think the world's religions would react to such a event? The only main stream religion, to my knowledge, that has given serious consideration to this is the Catholic church.
I'm reasonably sure the reaction would not be uniform across the mythic, delusional landscape.
What's your take on it?

Flying spaghetti monster's side project?
The "true believers" in crap like the rapture would twist some words coming from the"Book of Revelation"; the book described by Thomas Jefferson as the "ravings of a maniac."  They would see it as another holy prophesy come to pass that "end times" are upon us.  What the heck.  They're not rational now, so why would we expect them to be in the event we make contact with other intelligence?  They'd just fabricate more nonsense to justify their delusion.
Well said.  I agree.
That's true.  They are great at plastering over the cracks in the crumbling structure of their mythology.  It would be really funny if the aliens were as Aurthur C. Clarke described them in Childhood's End - looking like devils.
Doesn't LDS say God lives on a planet named kolob ?  They'd probably be able to incorporate some aliens.  And scientology is based on space travel so they'd probably enjoy an "i told you so" moment.
Yeah scientology would be all over that! Holy crap, Tom Cruise would think he had indubitable proof, that would be a nightmare. Thanks for ruining my fantasy, Anne!
lol
If you could hie to Kolob In the twinkling of an eye, And then continue onward With that same speed to fly, Do you think that you could ever, Through all eternity, Find out the generationWhere Gods began to be?
Stirring, isn't it?
I think most would explain it with the good old “God works in mysterious ways” thing.

Death of a family member

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…

Unbelievable!!!!!!!!

This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.

I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…

anti-atheist rant from an Orthodox Mormon part 2

What do you think of this,

Nathan Young,

No Jason Torpy it is you that should be banned for promoting atheism, a belief that has no foundation in reality and zero proof behind it.  The letter was a mockery of your atheist beliefs.  I request to the board here that they remove Jason for his unverifiable beliefs in atheism for which he has no proof other than his arrogance.  The letter was a mockery of atheism.  Atheism is stupid and it should be mocked and it…
