Here's the text of an e-mail I just had forwarded.

Just a few minutes ago I received the following text message on my phone from Sean Malone who leads Crisis Relief International (CRI). We then spoke briefly on the phone and I assured him that we would share this urgent prayer need with all of our contacts.

"We lost the city of Queragosh (Qaraqosh). It fell to ISIS and they are beheading children systematically. This is the city we have been smuggling food too. ISIS has pushed back Peshmerga (Kurdish forces) and is within 10 minutes of where our CRI team is working. Thousands more fled into the city of Erbil last night. The UN evacuated it's staff in Erbil. Our team is unmoved and will stay. Prayer cover needed!"

Please pray sincerely for the deliverance of the people of Northern Iraq from the terrible advancement of ISIS and its extreme Islamic goals for mass conversion or death for Christians across this region.

May I plead with you not to ignore this email. Do not forward it before you have prayed through it. Then send it to as many people as possible.

Send it to friends and Christians you may know. Send it to your prayer group. Send it to your pastor and phone him/her to pray on Sunday during the service - making a special time of prayer for this. We need to stand in the gap for our fellow Christians.

"And what does the Lord require of you?

To act justly and to love mercifully and to walk humbly with your God."    -Micah 6:8

The person who forwarded this is (otherwise) extremely bright and articulate, and even has a great sense of humor. How can so many seeming adults seriously believe in the efficacy of prayer on such a grand scale? Somehow this seems even more arrogant and idiotic than praying to win the lottery or cure gout. How can the infection of such childish magical thinking ever be healed?

And "praying through it" is going to do WHAT, exactly?  The more I hear about chain emails and other suchlike crap, the less hope I have for our species, to be honest.  I don't suppose the authors of these emails have considered encouraging donations to the Red Cross or writing their Congressperson and/or Senator, urging them to act in one way or another to solve this issue.

Oh, no, of course not.  That would be effective.

Sacrificing a few chickens might help though.

Depends. If the smoke from the altar where you burn the chickens goes up, you're OK. If it goes sideways or down, I'd say you're screwed.

If it's white, the chicken gets to be Pope.

Infallible in matters of faith and fricassee!

Why Pat, you should be a caterer - what a lovely pairing! Also, what a great title for a religiously themed cookbook. Jesus will cook more than just your goose, sinners of the world!

I love  it  when the e-mail  says  `Please  do  not Delete...Very  important'..........As if  by deleting it,  we will go to Hell, or  be  guilty of betrayal...

Bye guys......if you're idiotic enough to be there & not get the hell out.............

I don't think the prayers will be effective. The enemy has chariots of iron.

If the team in Erbil survives, then we will all have to eat our words. That will prove that prayer works.

wont it?
