some highlights:

  • "I don't think we did anything wrong" in handling abuse cases. He said he was not obligated to report abuse claims and maintained he inherited the cases from his predecessor and did not have any cases on his watch, according to the magazine.  Clergy in Connecticut have been required to report abuse claims to authorities since the early 1970s, according to attorneys who represented numerous abuse victims.
  • "I sound very defensive and I don't want to because I'm very proud of how this thing was handled," Egan said.

  •  "I believe the sex abuse thing was incredibly good." Asked if he meant because it resulted in positive changes, he responded, "Good that ... the record, I think, is an excellent record."

douchiness in next to godliness.  what an asshole!

"I don't think we did anything wrong"

I think Cardinal Egan would find several hundred (or several thousand?) victims who would disagree with that statement ... vociferously!

CARDINAL. An ecclesiastic with a rank superior to that of Jesus.

Egan said he was not obligated to report abuse claims. There's a stellar example of Catholic institutional morality. If he's not, who is? Am I, or any person, morally obligated to report a rape, a murder, a theft, or the torture and molestation of a child? What kind of freaking society does he want to live in when those who proclaim to hold the mantle of moral authority, have the character and ethics of an infected sewer rat? OK, I take that back. I shouldn't be picking on sewer rats.

I've seen people in criminal court go to prison for 20+ years for less than the criminal cover up of this scumbag. Excuse me while I go vomit.

I have to say this again:

If this had been Any Other Organization found to commit this brand of perfidy, the power of the US justice system would be all over it like white on rice. A full-on investigation would be executed, the perpetrators and collaborators arrested, and the properties of the organization CONFISCATED and likely used to pay court costs and damages to the victims.

There are a few instances where a badly watered-down version of the last paragraph has taken place, but I'm currently aware of no circumstance where the full weight of the law has landed on a church or diocese. It seems as though we as a culture are so willing to defer to the unearned authority of the RC church that we are willing to let their heinous crimes go essentially unanswered because of that deference.

To hell with vomiting - I want to punch out an archbishop!

Loren, I have a better idea.  25 years in Stateville prison. A maximum security facility outside of Chicago, in the city of Joliet. When he goes in the shower, he can learn all about "Romeo and Joliet." Serve the SOB right.

I'd LOVE it, Pat. Only problem is that we need someone to summon up the cojones to arrest the SOB, prosecute him and dump him in the slam. Once that's done, I'll feel a LOT better.

Side note: somehow, I doubt he'll be rooming with Joliet Jake or Elwood...!

Agree about the cojones. Somehow, I doubt there is a current politically appointed or elected prosecutor in the US who has the stones.

As to Jake and Elwood, they're just common thieves and hustlers. Places like Stateville have a special "welcoming committee" for child molesters. Too bad this rat bastard will never meet them.

Go get em, Loren! And while you're at it give perv coaches who caught, then are practically beatified after they die, a kick in the butt too.

Ruth, for the large portion, JoePa was decent people.  If he didn't completely follow through on the Jerry Sandusky business, he deserves what he gets for that, but let's remember who the real shit was in that business - Sandusky himself.

what is 'incredibly good' about it?

'an excellent record'?  what is excellent about it?

he's got his old fallback, i suppose - god works in mysterious (and creepy) ways.
