Resolved: Atheists Are More Cat People Than Dog People

Having co-habited with many cats over the years, I've found them to be free-thinking and inquisitive, like atheists. Dogs seem to be more accepting, more willing to go along. I think this accounts for the fact that atheists tend to favor cats over dogs. (I'm not saying atheists hate dogs--just that we're better attuned to cats.) Comments?

Really?  My cats come up to me when I come home and rub against my legs.  I have never met an Atheist like you describe.   And that's REALLY funny that you don't think cats are inquisitive.  Stranger and stranger...

Cats can be great. I do prefer dogs but I've had some wonderful cats in my time. But please, folks, they're not freethinkers; they're not *thinkers*.

You have a point.  I do think it's possible that cats do some rudimentary reasoning.  I'd be interested in seeing some empirical evidence for such reasoning, if it exists.  Can you point me to any?  After all, it's the positive claim that bears the burden of proof.  "Seems obvious to me" is anecdotal and, while it may be of some interest, is merely someone's personal opinion.

Timothy, I disagree with the atheist being cold and unable to connect on an intimate level with other people.  I find that on a xtian level and they call themselves being friendly.  I hate cats unless it is a big cat.

Cats will come to me in a NY nano-second and want to rub against my leg.  I'd rather take a pit bull anytime.

Timothy, I disagree with your assessment of atheists.  I have not met one that is cold and unable to connect with people.  I will assign that assessment to xtians.  Cats will come to me and try to rub on my legs and I will send them packing.

As for a big cat, I have no problem with them.  They can rub all they want as long as they don't think I will be their next play toy or dinner.  :-)

Whether you are a cat person or dog person, the important thing is for as atheist/humanist, to cherish all living creatures.

Oscar I could not agree more! Thanks for your wonderful statement that we should cherish all living creatures.

Yes Oscar Lei, you are right.  And I do cherish all animals.  Except for a few human ones that I can't stand... ;)

Insects are not my favorites. I am quite partial to snails as an appetizer, but that probably doesn't count as "cherishing" them.

Well put Oscar,

and that is why I am a vegetarian.

As an aside, I am often confused by people who describe themselves as 'animal lovers' (once said to me - unaware of the irony - by someone who was eating a burger at the time!).

If one professes love for animals I am baffled as to how one can then eat them. Cat, dog, budgie, hamster, horse, iguana, pot bellied vietnamese pig, cow, snake, chicken, what's the difference? They are all sentient beings capable of feeling pain, and also capable of giving companionship and affection.

Michael Brice, that is why my Mom has been a vegetarian for 17 years, and why I am going to become one.  I just can't eat meat anymore.  The thought of eating it makes me feel sick. ~ Melinda

Scientifically, biologically, we are not vegetarians, we are omnivores by content, and scavengers by behaviour, through 4 million years of evolution. A societal ideological dogma can indeed be imposed or sold or coerced, just as religion and patriarchy have been, but any such super-imposed ideology is bound for eventual failure. True nature eventually shines through. Treat the animals right, stop human population growth (land use growth), and eat less meat. Elimination is not the solution.

Death of a family member

Posted by Larry Taylor on May 20, 2013 at 8:15pm 4 Comments

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…

Unbelievable!!!!!!!!

This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.

I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…

anti-atheist rant from an Orthodox Mormon part 2

What do you think of this,

Nathan Young,

No Jason Torpy it is you that should be banned for promoting atheism, a belief that has no foundation in reality and zero proof behind it.  The letter was a mockery of your atheist beliefs.  I request to the board here that they remove Jason for his unverifiable beliefs in atheism for which he has no proof other than his arrogance.  The letter was a mockery of atheism.  Atheism is stupid and it should be mocked and it…

Anti-atheist post from an Orthdox Mormon

What do you think of this Facebook comment?

Nathan Young to Jason Torpy,

for once you and I can agree on something.  We should disrespect beliefs that are untenable such as the belief that there is no God.  Indeed for me to respect you Jason, I cannot respect your belief in non-belief in atheism.  Your atheism comes across as arrogrance, smugness, and self righteous.  Indeed after reading "An Open Letter to My Religious Friends" I penned one…
