The concept of looking before leaping comes to mind.  Why is that, do you think?

I hadn't seen that scene in over 25 years! That's really cool -- wonder where I can get a place like that?

Funny, it doesn't mention a direction and my mind assumed the steps go down rather than up.  I'd imagine most of the 'congregation' would assume the steps go up.  I wonder if there is a psychological component more than just a glass half full or half empty kind of thing.
