ON THE GULF OF MEXICO — The deadly blowout of an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico was triggered by a bubble of methane gas that escaped from the well and shot up the drill column, expanding quickly as it burst through several seals and barriers before exploding, according to interviews with rig workers conducted during BP's internal investigation.

Methane. Bottom burps. The simplest of flammable hydrocarbons. The gas that makes life as a Chinese coal miner an extreme sport.

Of course in communist countries like Australia, where the government fascists constantly interfere and stick their noses where they don't belong, enforcing mandatory safety standards with interventionist Stalinist laws, methane related coal mining fatalities are inexplicably practically nil. Naturally, the government is rife with corrupt apparatchik bureaucrats who are all in the pockets of the safety engineering industry, robbing the citizens blind with taxation to subsidise it. It is fucking horrendous.

So all you teabaggers and Obama haters should be proud you live in a free country. Without your complete disregard for regulation, environment, safety standards and all of the other gears and cogs of SOCIALISM, the Deepwater Horizon oil disaster would not have been possible. Quite likely, with government interference, the rig would probably have been safely commissioned and pumping oil for production now...

But it isn't - because the world's biggest oil corporation has the RIGHT to ignore fart gas safety to add a few micro-percentage points to the bottom line, you can again sleep easy knowing that liberty and freedom still prevail.

We are surrounded by these CAPITALISM!!!!! people (who almost never understand the the depths of how all of this works) so I posted it for my husband's facebook page to make them go crazy. :) Thank you. It will be fun.

It's a conspiracy! kahtrue, your mind is not free if you immediately leap beyond the obvious and most likely explanation of a simple fuckup (made even more likely in a climate of deregulation) to one of terrorist action. I wouldn't rule out the possibility, but terrorists have much, much easier targets. You are making what is known as an argument from ignorance, and it doesn't look good on you.
Wow, you have quite the imagination there, kahtrue. I'm sorry, but many, many, many things are precisely that simple. Which is why the mundane explanation is by far the more likely scenario. You're the one with the extraordinary theory, so the burden of proof is on you. And where did I say that terrorists wear uniforms?

There are, in fact, many very much easier targets than an offshore oil rig, where every worker knows every worker, and you don't just drive up to the parking lot with a car bomb. It takes a significant amount more work to attack an offshore rig than to attack a refinery, say, or a pipeline out in the middle of nowhere. In fact, pipelines are the target of choice for terrorists in Iraq (apart from open-air markets crowded with civilians).

You're engaging in magical thinking if you think BP and the government wouldn't have blamed this on terrorists if they possibly could have. And conspiracy nutjobbery, as well, if you think they're busy covering something like that up.

So feel free to prove your case, but given that you can't write coherently, I'm not holding my breath at your ability to reason from evidence.

Methane explosions are the most common, and inexcusable, cause of resource industry accidents. Additionally, there is no such thing as a methane explosion that cannot be prevented by responsible engineering. None. And there is no such thing as a terrorist that could cause a deliberate methane explosion at a properly engineered site, any more than there are terrorists that can secretly smuggle a 1000 tonnes of nanothermite into the WTC and paint it on all of the load bearing structure.

You loons are as dumb, and as reprehensible in your perverse logic, as any theist.

What? That doesn't make any sense.

Ever heard the old "...that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, ..." spiel? A group of, for example, a few hundred people working for a common end but lacking the resources needed to communicate with all of each other enough to know that their actions aren't stepping on some toes can, in fact, organize a hierarchical authority structure to help keep their individual actions from getting in the way of their bigger goal. When such people's goal is to life their lives and wield their L.L.H. rights as above, such an overseeing structure is a government in theory and practice. No mind control or microchips in your coffee sending you signals that make you wet yourself involved.

The counterpoints to your argument are exactly as batshit insane and/or pig ignorant as you'd expect them to be. The three most popular floating around right now are:
A) That eco-terrorists blew the rig (Usually under orders from the President) so they could force through legislation to try to "save" the environment. This is favored by the batshit crazy group that latches onto any passing conspiracy.
B) That somehow government regulation itself is what caused the disaster. Favored by the dumber libertarians. (The smart ones are pretending it didn't happen at all.)
C)That liberals and environmentalists are the ones that insisted on offshore drilling while conservatives opposed it all along. Best I can tell this one is around just because stupid people are stupid.
There's also D) Oil isn't actually harmful and it will eventually go away on its own, so leave BP alone. Mostly being spouted by dittoheads (Limbaugh fans) right now, but picking up steam.

You may not have even seen the worst of it. The workers are being prevented from wearing safety gear they KNOW they're supposed to wear. It requires a 40 hour HAZWOPER card to work the spill, and part of that course is being taught to wear a respirator around this kind of stuff. Unfortunately our worker protection agencies have been effectively castrated by the orgy of deregulation that happened over the last 2 decades or so, so it seems like nothing is going to be done about it as more and more of their workers fall ill. (BP is claiming it's food poisoning, I shit you not.) Last I was down there (2 days ago) I saw roughly 80 BP workers: Not one was wearing a respirator. A few had bandannas tied across their mouths. They've griped to the media (Despite being ordered not to by their bosses) and now BP has companies bringing in prisoners to work the spill. Slaves are far easier to manipulate, after all. They're claiming they're having problems getting enough workers. Of course the high turnover rate could be due to poisoning and not payingthe workers they've got.
Bill, there's this new thing called the interwebz that lets you keep up with Oniony things from other places. I think it's a series of pneumatic tubes. You should probably look into it. Carefully, though. If something pops out of the tube when you're looking, you could lose an eye.
I hate to break this to you but, The Onion moved out of Madison about 10 years ago. You can still get it there, though. They also have a website.
