Here is Barack Obama on "religious freedom":I had been thinking that for weeks. The Christian right takes martyrdom seriously. They want you to believe that Obama is Nero Caesar persecuting the Christians. (History tellsus it is unlikely Nero burned Rome and very likely the story arose because of some fevered revisionist mind, one just like David Barton, Faux News's very own Goebbels, and thus highly suspect.) Nobody told them that the joke was on them: John of Patmos was describing current events and not making dire predictions about the Second Coming when he scratched out his Revelations. The Great Beast = 666 = Nero Caesar. Now, Obama is labeled the anti-Christ in both senses of the term: the president is a Muslim waging jihad against the "American family" (newspeak for evangelical bigots) and forcing contraceptive inclusion in the health plans of for-profit industries is a sign of the End Times. Obama is a socialist communist Nazi totalitarian, a 21 century Nero Caesar. It might even be possible, by Greek letter = number manipulation, to make Barack Obama 666. He's telling right wingnut Christians they do not speak for a majority of Americans and that they cannot make pretzels of our language for dogmatic purposes. Just why I voted for him. If Christians really want martyrdom, I would suggest a surcharge or tax set aside for the purpose of buying crosstimbers and railroad nails so we can give 'em what they want and, like Emeril, kick it up a notch!
James, I've been bothered by the above alleged quote for a while, ever since I think you or someone else here posted a different graphic with the same quote. I Googled it and snopes.com and newrepublic.com among more than a couple others find it to be questionable at best. I would have LOVED that quote to be real, but the evidence for its reality is painfully thin.
As for the rest of what you have to say, zero argument.
This is the closest I could come to finding an Obama speech on the topic, and in this speech he does not say that. Somewhat close, but not quite. But of course there could have been another speech where he did say that.....
Consider the backlash if Obama HAD said that. He would have been accused of being anti-religious or a closet atheist (either of which might be true and no problem to us!). Faux Noise would be having multiple orgasms over such a statement, never mind Pat Robertson, Timothy Cardinal Dolan or Bill Donohue of the Catholic League.
This one of the biggest problems with current politics: you can't speak your mind openly about some topics without someone on the other side of the aisle accusing you of attacking them or their lifestyle or belief system. Thinking about that last, this effort regarding birth control may be one of the first fronts where religion is being told that it doesn't rule the roost and needs to recognize that. Being that religion and particularly both catholicism and evangelical christianity both think they DO rule it, said issue immediately becomes highly contentious. The shame is that, if the Constitution were recognized for what it says, it shouldn't be so.
To date, religion DOES have influence on government because the government has LET IT. Disabusing religion of that notion will be no easy matter.
From George Orwell's 1984:
Via the Ministry of Truth (minitrue):
"War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength".
From the wikipedia discussion - The Ministry of Truth is involved with news media, entertainment, the fine arts and educational books. Its purpose is to rewrite history to change the facts to fit Party doctrine for propaganda effect. For example, if Big Brother makes a prediction that turns out to be wrong, the employees of the Ministry of Truth go back and rewrite the prediction so that any prediction Big Brother previously made is accurate.
Sounds like the republicans, evangelicals, and catholics.
that's wild. n' true. stalkers imho. w/ties to russia mob. why lie? columbian mob. whatever meth dealing mob. rapes.. u name it. it's truly organized crime. and the kids are taught not to give a fuck if you're 'undesirable' atheist. forget it.. they start spitting; threats..
hey jail like them. that's what i tell em. fubar
Not trying to derail anything here, but I would expand Jame's idea to include the rise of fundamentalist influence worldwide. In the US, it is the Christian version of the Party of God who wants to instill their version of Sharia law based upon their holy book of fairy tales. The Taliban by any other name. Secular values of freedom, individual choice, and respect for the rights of others are brushed aside in favor of the correct religious groupthink. And, what's worse, is that if they can just get rid of the gays, liberals, humanists, unbelievers, and the other categories of their imagined enemies, the fantasy based orgasmic death wish of these cults will come true with the 2nd coming, the return of the 12th imam, and the appearance of the messiah. Then everyone will rise up to heaven on the wings of a nuclear mushroom cloud where, presumably, they can begin the fight all over again from their respective heavens.
before you see the light
you must dieeeee!!!! ; )
