My story is pretty much the same as a lot of non theists.  I was born into a Christian home, went to church every Sunday, I was baptized, the whole shebang. I always remember praying and wondering why I wasn't getting an answer back or getting anything that I wanted. When I got into middle school I specifically remember going to church and seeing a banner that said we should submit to the lord and serve him. That really didn't sit well with me. I didn't want to be anyone's slave. Once I got in to high school and started taking science classes is when I really started the path to disbelief. My senior year my physics teacher made us read The Elegant Universe, and after that I started to really not believe. I went on a fishing trip with the pastor of my church and asked him a slew of questions about what I had learned. He just kept spitting out the typical theist answers of "you just have to have faith" and "the Lord works in mysterious ways".  I let that conversation simmer for a good year or so, and finally, about 4 years ago, admitted to myself that I didn't believe in God. I wasn't really open about being a atheist until about a year ago, and since then I've learned a lot and I hope to learn so much more. I'm going into the US Navy in a couple weeks and I'm thinking about starting a blog about what its like to be an open atheist in the military. It might not be any different but we'll see.
