Permalink Reply by Blake Jackson on January 1, 2011 at 3:23pm I think you should analyse your situation with survival logic. If you were in a situation where the continuation of the human species was at stake your decission instincts should be the following. Young females (future reproduction) are saved first with at least one male young. Older females are saved next. They can still reproduce and take care of the young being saved. Enough strong males are saved to continue the species. In your scenario, mature men may not be needed in the life boat since if the woman and children can survive without them.
My guess is that all ethic decissions are rooted in deep survival logic; eventhough, your "survival logic" may be different from some elses. Christian and any successfull theist values have strong "survival logic". If they did not, they would not be around long.

Permalink Reply by Gary Burk on January 21, 2011 at 7:44am As usual, I'm late to this party. Nevertheless . . .
I suggest the best solution to the lifeboat problem is for the person who has the power or authority to decide the order of boarding ( "the Captain" )to make a selection based on the passengers value, as he is able to determine that. If he has a young Einstein or Ghandi, they get on the lifeboat first because they are the most valuable in his opinion. If a young Lizzie Bordon, although perhaps she she seems an attractive breeder, she would be among the last.
The Captain, like all of us is biased and has incomplete knowledge and insufficient wisdom to select by value accurately, and he is wise enough to recognize these limitations. He does have the power to enforce his selections, therefor not to do so would be, for him, immoral. It's absurd to select by any criterion other than anticipated future value. Value is, of course, subjective.

If you can't beat em*, confuse em...
*make no mistake, you can't beat em when the question is a loaded hypothetical with infinite possibilities for moving goal posts. i.e. you suggest women and children, they reply young Hitler is on board, etc. etc. ad infinitum et nauseum.

There is a video of the Pope's 'exorcism' caught on film. The man isn't demon possessed, there are likely no 'real' demons. He's just delusional and doesn't want to accept personal responsiblity for his own behavior for his own dysfunctional life.

There is an ad that reads ' Do you support 'traditional' marriage? Vote Now"! .
No, I don't support 'traditional' marriage because there is no such thing. I support heterosexual and same-sex couples marry each other legally , yes. 'Traditional' marriage promoters largely do not believe that heterosexual women are co-equal to their husbands. Their only purpose in 'traditional' marriage is to sexually satisfy their husbands if they can and raise children and do all…

i've got no problem with everyone saying "merry christmas" on christmas day. however, they've turned it into an entire holiday season where it lasts a month or more. in those situations it should be perfectly acceptable to say "happy holidays" or call it a…

I posted the bulk of this on another thread, but wanted to add some context separately.
I finally confronted my faith and embraced the fact of my atheism late last August, 2012. Days after I revealed my "epiphany" to a few friends who knew me from another message board, my sister died from Lou Gehrig's Disease (which pissed her off because she hated catching a disease from someone she never f---ed).
THAT was my sister, understand? She was a beautiful, life-loving, potty-mouthed…
