Erez Yechiel, the subject of the story, is an Orthodox Jewish artist in Israel who specializes in religious music.

The crime he received the lashes for? He performed in front of an audience that included both men AND women.

More here.

Well, if he embraces that kind of insanity, he can hardly complain when it comes back to bite him in the ass.
What the Jerusalem Times news article neglects to report is that the lashing was more symbolic than painful. The whole thing was probably a collusive stunt on the part of the rabbis and the singer to get a little publicity for the ultraorthodox's morality crusade.

The bias in Israeli reporting probably is due to how much most Israelis dislike the ultraorthodox, a minority who have a disproportionate amount of influence in the Knesset (Israeli parliament) since their splinter party usually has to be wooed into coalitions by the larger parties in order to achieve a governing majority. They've wormed all kinds of welfare and special privileges for themselves by this means... and gotten a lot of religious laws passed in what is otherwise a secular nation.

Did I say the majority dislike them? For many Israelis the feeling is stronger than that.

Israel doesn't look like a secular nation to me. It awards its citizenship to first-day immigrants, who have no previous connection to the country, on the basis of religious background; at the same time, people who have a long-standing connection to the country are forced to live in refugee camps abroad and banned from coming back. Ultra-Orthodox Jews have been subsidised since Israel's inception so that they don't have to work - that's not recent. Civil marriage does not exist. Your religious background influences where you're allowed to live, too. The obligation to military service differs depending on religious background. Am I forgetting anything?
Israel awards citizenship to first-day immigrants on religious and ethnic backgrounds-they need to attract Jewish people from all around the world (mostly from Eastern Europe and Russia), because they fear being outnumbered by the arab Israeli citizens; that's also why they subsidize Ortodow Jews to do nothing but breed.
