The World’s Largest Coalition of Nontheists and Nontheist Communities!

I wanted to put this question out there to see how strongly everyone feels on this subject. Being that most of us trust in scientific fact and reasoning, I was wondering if everyone is absolutely, undeniably, 100% sure that a god doesn't exist.  I personally take into account that there is no proof of any cosmic creator so therefore I am about 99.9999% sure that there is no god. However we all agree that science is an ever evolving field and I don't think that there will ever be any proof to support the existence of a supreme being, but I can't be 100% sure until there is concrete proof against one. I would like to know what all of your thoughts on this.

No, probability is an expected value of combining potentials. Probability is dependend on the amount and type of potentials present.

Example:  E=Mc^2 is an expected value of potential. The splitting of an atom may yield tremendous energy, however unless a secondary causality (potential), such as a compressing force is introduced, this potential remains latent and the probability of a spontaneous conversion would remain low, though the potential remains.

or

I have a car with the potential to travel @ 120mph. But I am allowed to travel only at 60mph. Thus I travel @ 50% of the car's potential speed. It is improbable that I will ever use the car at full speed (its full potential remains latent).

Thus the term: that which "may" become reality.

I am using a linguistic definition of potential. In mathematics, physics, biology, etc. the word and definition of potential has a more expansive use than the limited use of potential in relation to gods existing. I am with Richard Rorty when he states that philosophy and philosophical arguement is about the use of language.[/quote]

I am not disputing that clarity of language is an essential ingredient in debate. However I must disagree with your observation that the use of the word potential in a discussion about god is limited. The opposite is true. In science, etc., the use of the word potential is very much restricted and narrowly focused. It is in philosophy and language that the word is applicable in an almost unlimited usage. With one single limitation, it must precede an event, any event, every event.

Theism promotes the idea that god has unlimited potential, but goes even further by saying that god can change the rules by which potential can be expressed in physical reality.
A miracle (an apparent magical uncaused event) is attributed solely to the power (potential) of god's willful intention, but completely ignores that this is demonstrably contrary to the laws by which the implicate (potential) becomes explicate (reality). In effect it is a fictional event.

OTOH it might be a natural event in which god has no part at all, but where the observer's ignorance ascribes a "supernatural" causality.

I'm 99.999% sure that the Christian God does not exist. A lot of that is hope though. That God is a dick.

I am comfortable enough to say that I am 100% positive that god does not exist. I do not now, nor will I ever again believe in god. Even if he was to come tome and say "I'm here, god I am." I would laugh and say, "Yeah right."

Strangely, I am 100% sure that if christ returned (without the flaming thunderbolts) to earth, theists themselves would string him up as they did in days past.

A friend of mine tried this experiment in a discussion with a priest, who had just stated with certainty that christ would return.

At this point in the dicussion about the ressurrection of christ, my friend told the priest that because he was a trusted believer, he was ready to reveal himself as christ resurrected.

The priest immediately damned him to hell for being an imposter and blasphemy!

Lol...yeah. Seeing is believing but first, lets see some lightning bolts and flying or whatever people think god does (besides nothing) nowadays. And even then I'd want nothing to do with him and his religion. I mean, seriously, who wants to spend eternity with an omnipotent voyeuristic sadist, Jerry Faldwell, and Pat Robinson anyway? Now, that's my idea of hell!

99.9% - Anytime in history when there has been an unknown - a god has been the default explanation.  Fortunately, we have science to battle against sky gods and eventually it will answer humanities toughest questions.
