look this thread may look awful to some but it is a fact that all organized religion have made colonies in india except atheism.
this is really wired because all other organized religion or god people has nothing to give to humankind but atheism has many things to give to the world:
1] scientific outlook/thinking.
2] self respect: there is nobody to woo.
3] elimination of superstition.
4] make life meaningful.
there are many benefits of atheism. why such a beneficial thing is not spread india wide.
but how to spread atheism in india?
i thought of a strategy:
we should use the same tactics which organized religions use.
we will create an organization first. then our org. will provide daily necessary things to poor, take care of orphans only in the name of science not in the name of god. there we will provide world class education to kids, make them truly scientific thinker.
we will invade colleges and universities and target young mind to bring them on the path of science. we will provide them jobs in our organization.
any body who will renounce their god/religion to become atheist will get special privileges beside these things.
then we will go to media, buy time slots and air our atheist programme. we will regularly debunk so called religious fanatics.
we will lobby in the parliament to make a truly seculer society.
this way we can turn India into an atheist country.
but we need a lot of money for that. to get money we must make some industrialist atheist.
the benefit:
india is world's 2nd largest population second only to china. if we can turn at least 1 % of this population atheist, we will do a good job. our dream of a secular scientific minded world will come true.

ideas and thoughts are welcome.
Permalink Reply by Karl on February 16, 2012 at 8:01am I think the only way to spread Atheism is through education and by having the courage to demonstrate that no hand of some god is going to strike you down by simply admitting there are on magical people living in outer space who a waiting to grant you wishes. Atheist have the ability to educate others on their side. Religion, being irrational, false and thus unprovable must rely on inculcation.
That's one of the reasons I like the American Atheist "Myth" billboards. I disagree with the timing of the bill boards but that's another story. I don't know much about Indian culture other than Hinduism dominates the religious landscape with a respectable number of Muslims thrown in. Obviously, there are a large number of highly educated Indians so separating them from superstition should be easier. I don't know if you can or how to separate the uneducated from such beliefs
Permalink Reply by MADHUKAR KULKARNI on February 16, 2012 at 11:17am You have the correct perspective. Education is no doubt is the first neeed but Indians do not acquire a scientific temper even after learning science. Indian society is still evolving culturally. Indians are good at learning science, they do not oppose science in the name of god or religion, they accept science as truth. The just have to go a step further now but it will take some time. The process will accelerate if we will have a good atheist leadet.
Permalink Reply by arnab banerjee on February 17, 2012 at 4:47am how to motivate indians to fully give up god and accept science as their god? so far education concerned, india already have too much school, college etc. so education will not motivate. then what will motivate?
is it money? is it force ? is it facility or special advantage? if an organization of atheist started to say that if poors give up god and turned atheist, they will be given special advantages. will not the poors be motivated?

Permalink Reply by Hiram on February 18, 2012 at 11:48am My understanding is that there are atheistic schools of philosophy in Hindu tradition, most prominent being the Carvaka school. Maybe this ancient philosophy should be re-affirmed by modern Hindu atheists as a legitimate and complete ideology, and as a modern alternative to superstition in Indian society. I think its relevance will only grow in our age.
Permalink Reply by MADHUKAR KULKARNI on February 20, 2012 at 6:46am Just a few days back, a discussion on freethinking traditions of world was posted by Alice in the Origins group and from the interest you show, I am sure that you will find it interesting. I have provided a brief history of Indian atheism in the same discussion.
Indian atheism starts well before Charvaka. The Vedas are the foundation of Hindu/Vedic relation and even the show an agnostic statement in one place, which I have quoted in the above discussion. Do see that discussion.
Permalink Reply by Hiram on February 22, 2012 at 1:02pm The Bible also, in the Book of Ecclesiastes, has agnostic verses like the one who says that no one knows what happens after death and that, once dead, there is no more enjoyment. Ecclesiastes happens to be my favorite Bible book :)
Permalink Reply by Anu R on February 24, 2012 at 1:08am Support Nirmukta, an explicitly atheist organization that's already doing a lot of good work, Arnab. Also note that public atheists in India are not entirely free of fear for their very lives - case in point, Ajita Kamal, founder of Nirmukta, who was found murdered in Chennai last month (or late December 2011), just a few blocks from his home. He was in his early thirties when his life was snuffed out.
