My friend came up to me two days ago (March 25) and said that it was me that converted her to atheism. I showed her a couple of books, websites, and some of my favorites on youtube about a month ago, when she asked me about Atheism. I didn't really intend to convert her purposely, we were just casually yapping in my house about nothing and the subject came up. She thanked me too! This is the first person I ever converted!

If anyone has similar or great stories, please share.

You mean turned someone into a freethinker?
Perhaps Ingersol CD's, O'hare audio CD's....
Seems being able to sleep at night and 'science' are good at doing the switch as well...
Becoming an Atheist is simply removing a cross from ones back. For me, there's no room on my back for any more goddam crosses.
Working on it. Working on it.

Unfortunately, the guy I was working on picked up a Southern Baptist girlfriend, and he's a total idiot who doesn't do much thinking above the belt. She's got an argument that I can't top.
The great thing about that argument is that if it is actually being used, there's probably some Biblical law-breaking going on. Even if it is only being fantasized (lust in the heart ....)
Yeah, but alas, he doesn't seem to have the necessary self-awareness to see the hypocrisy. Most Southern Baptists I've known don't.
lol
nope. I haven't converted anybody. I'm just hoping that I've helped clear up some misconceptions about atheism. That's the best I can hope for. :)
Smells like church in here. ;)
Since I went public with my Atheism upon retirement 22 years I have tried my best to get people to THINK about religions. Hundreds of letters to the editor, picketing churches the White House, the Congress the Supreme Court, etc. Believe I've 'converted' a few Agnostics to Atheism, a few Xians to at least question the doctrines & dogma of Xianity. Made a lot of friends & quite a few enemies too. I cherish both.
Yup, sounds like the mission statement of The Atheist Experience show ... not the official mission statement that they rattle off at the beginning of the show, but the real, personal reason they do it, which they give when they get someone calling in asking them why they would do a show about Atheism. That's the most we can reasonably hope for, in most situations, just nudging people a little bit in our direction, or at least helping mitigate the damage done by idiots like Ray Comfort.

My understanding is that Theism/Atheism is the base and Gnosticism/Agnosticism is the modifier.

A Gnostic Christian is one of the fundies, who knows that the Bible is the literal word of God, who talks to God (there are meds that can fix that), and is very dictatorial about their religion.

Agnostic Christians are the wishy-washy apologists who pick and choose what they want out of the Bible ... some of them barely believe in the Bible at all and just have this weird concept that there is a god, and God is love, and God is all Good, and blah blah blah blah blah.

Agnostic Atheists don't believe that there is sufficient proof to believe in a deity, but they haven't seen enough evidence to declare that there certainly isn't a deity.

Gnostic Atheists are the "hard Atheists" who feel they have enough evidence to declare that there definitely is not a God.

I'm not sure I'd classify myself all the way over in the last category ... but if there is any kind of deity out there, and I somehow did find enough evidence to believe in it, I'd have some serious questions that would need answering, before I could worship it. The way that our creator is running the world displays either gross incompetence or a sadistic streak.

My first funeral as an atheist

Posted by Two Cult Survivor on May 21, 2013 at 11:30am 0 Comments

I posted the bulk of this on another thread, but wanted to add some context separately.

I finally confronted my faith and embraced the fact of my atheism late last August, 2012. Days after I revealed my "epiphany" to a few friends who knew me from another message board, my sister died from Lou Gehrig's Disease (which pissed her off because she hated catching a disease from someone she never f---ed).

THAT was my sister, understand? She was a beautiful, life-loving, potty-mouthed…

Death of a family member

Posted by Larry Taylor on May 20, 2013 at 8:15pm 7 Comments

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…

Unbelievable!!!!!!!!

Posted by Christy Stewart on May 20, 2013 at 2:17pm 6 Comments

This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.

I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…

anti-atheist rant from an Orthodox Mormon part 2

What do you think of this,

Nathan Young,

No Jason Torpy it is you that should be banned for promoting atheism, a belief that has no foundation in reality and zero proof behind it.  The letter was a mockery of your atheist beliefs.  I request to the board here that they remove Jason for his unverifiable beliefs in atheism for which he has no proof other than his arrogance.  The letter was a mockery of atheism.  Atheism is stupid and it should be mocked and it…
