H.Con.Res. 13: Reaffirming “In God We Trust” as the official motto of the United States and supporting and encouraging the public display of the national motto

This is what privilege looks like:

this has been our national motto since day 1! If EVERYONE has FREEDOM OF SPEECH...WHY isn't MINE being protected as well? https://www.popvox.com/bills/us/112/hconres13/comment/83540

...

any person, or persons not supporting this is certainly an un-American activity. Un-Americans are near treason. Totally unacceptable. https://www.popvox.com/bills/us/112/hconres13/comment/58642

Micah 6:8 --
8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.

it's time we return to the heritage given us by our Founding Fathers. This country was established based on Christian Principles and has prospered under those principles.
Look at what is happening to our country in the wake of the successful attempts to eliminate God from any public display. When it comes to Christian symbols all it takes is for one person to object and it is taken down, while the Menorah and Muslim symbols are left on display.
Our country is in serious decline and I believe the attack on God is the reason why. We are no longer, "One Nation under God' and therefore no longer have His Blessing.
When will someone stop the atheists, Muslims, and others from using our Constitution against us to limit First Amendment rights of a select group of people, namely, the Christians. Laws have been enacted that "prohibit the free exercise" of my Christian beliefs in certain places, and my freedom of speech has been violated as well.
It is time to STOP the attack on Christians' rights The end goal is to eliminate God from our country, and God help us if they succeed. https://www.popvox.com/bills/us/112/hconres13/comment/43489

Make no mistake, they hate us, and they think they have the blessing of their deity to do so.  Want to have your say?  Click here: https://www.popvox.com/bills/us/112/hconres13

I know your average fundie ain't bright-but come the heck on already!  Children can read the U.S. Constitution in grade school.  How dumb does anyone have to be to swallow this crap?  This document isn't a hidden secret of the Freemasons.

Christian nation??!  Oh yeah, except for that little thingy called the first ammendment-they never really MEANT separation of church and state, you know.  Oh and the Treaty of Tripoli stating that the United States of America was never founded on the Christian religion--man the founding fathers had no idea any such statement was ever attributed to them, I'm sure! And by the way, they NEVER would have signed a peace accord or treaty with any Arab/Muslim countries, right...?  Because we are a christian nation...right?  yeah!

Just recently an accqaintance sent me an e-mail stating that Barack Obama had just made it official U.S. policy that no soldier in uniform could ever attend a faith-based service anywhere, ever!  And she really believed it!  Not that it wouldn't be nice to see ol' B.O. show some standuppityness to the fundies-but come on!  Religious expression forbidden to U.S. troops?!  Who in their right minds would even believe such garbage?  Well unfortunately there are alot of those folks-and they all have e-mail!

We need real leadership now, or we will never reclaim that sense of civilization that we had achieved over 200 years ago.  Those are the "values we are losing".

YEAH America the Corporatist Theocracy... full-frontal American Fascism, here we come. The Republican Party = anti-republican, traitorous, and anti-science, yet still Uber-alles patriotic.

At least with the Democratic Party you get the expected elite plutocracy while avoiding the theocratic part of American fascism.

I hate how our money and seems to tell the world that this is a religious country. NOT all of us believe this Christian crap. ELIMINATE this motto for good!
Actually . . . the motto wasn't that since Day 1. The motto was changed to that in the 1940's or 50's due to WWII and all of that. The original motto was E Pluribus Unum (Out of many, one) and that's what it should return to.
I agree, it's a historical motto and even sounds good to the ear.

I might feel a bit differently if I believed there was such a thing as Christian unity, charity, or cooperation.  But there isn't and rarely has been.  I don't think they realize that being Christian isn't something to be so proud (and patriotic) about.  We really need to counter that argument.  There are so many instances in our history where Christians have fought and killed Christians...being convinced and certain that victory meant god would bless them for their actions.  How charitable is that?  There is so much in-fighting, back-biting, and fracturing divisions that we atheists can rest assured that this concept of 'a Christian Nation' is just a pipe dream.

We are all supposed to have 'freedom and liberty of conscience'...not freedom to drown out opposition because we have the loudest voices in the room.  Atheists are in the minority and no minority group, religious or otherwise, should feel threatened that the government in power will strip a citizen's voice or strongly held convictions.  Christians are still in the majority and will remain so into the near future...this persecution complex they have is really annoying.

I bet they would feel differently if the majority in this country was Muslim. Or even LDS.
But Latter Day Saints are still considered "Christian" correct?  They were really persecuted during the McCarthy error for not saying the pledge of allegiance... their failure to do so was seen as 'treasonous' behavior.   Conscientious objectors have also had to take a lot of heat from 'Christians'...wasn't Jesus once considered 'the prince of peace'? You'd never know it now.

Mormons consider themselves Christians, but I participated in anti-cult seminars in the SBC that promoted, let's say, a "different" view.

"Faith" is a virtue as long as that "faith" is compatible with your own.

I love how all the orthodox Christian sects don't consider themselves 'cultish'....only the other ones are cults.  The Catholics called the Protestants heretics...the Puritans called the Quakers heretics....under perpetual threat of heresy within the ranks!
As I blogged about this before on another forum:

Instead of protesting or arguing against the pledge’s -“one nation under god” or the “in god we trust” on our US currency, or the “so help me god” in our oath… … we should allow it. We should allow it under one circumstance.

That the word “god” be clarified. “god” is vague. Which “god”? Out of the thousands of gods that have existed…. To which god are we referring to? If we cannot specify which one – then the clause must be removed. Obviously every asshole will push to get their god appointed. And “Christian God” is not specific enough. The denomination must be spelled out….

“One nation under the Catholic God. “
“In the Mormon God we trust.”
“So help me Allah.”

Then… the rest of the religions and denominations will know how we feel. Then…maybe they will realize why we need separation of Church and State. Let’s see Gov Perry swear under oath to Allah. Let see Pres Obama swear to Thor. How would the Protestant Christian Right feel about “one nation under the Mormon God”? Why should they get away with the vague clause of “god”? Aren’t we entitled as taxpaying citizens to know which god we are having to be helped by or trusted under? Let the religions battle it out. The vagueness of “god” is what is keeping these clauses intact and untouched. They will never be removed by atheist.

You make a very good point.

I think it's very interesting and meaningful that the phrase 'one nation, under god' was added during the McCarthy era....making a patriotic, secular pledge to one's country into a quasi-religious statement.  (I just don't say those words when I make the pledge.  I can't even recall the last time I was required to say it anyway.)

If I have to make a court appearance anytime soon, I suppose I'll keep a tiny copy of the 'bill of rights' on me.  That way I can make my 'pledge of honesty' on THAT...ha.  Do they make nice little leather bound copies that would fit in a purse.  Maybe somebody should start THAT business venture.
