A.C Grayling asks what a non-fundamentalist atheist would be ? He asks if a non-fundamentalist atheist would, perhaps, believe in only a part of God (a divine foot or buttock), or if a non-fudmentalist atheist would believe in a part time god (one who maybe exists on wednesdays or saturdays, or even maybe on sundays). The reason he asks is because this is one of the relatively new last ditch efforts used by Christians, saying that atheism is just another religion, and that some atheists are fundamentalist atheists, just as some Christians are fundamentalists. Grayling is saying that all atheists are fundamentalist atheists, but it has nothing to do with atheism being a belief system or religion, which it is not. His final word on the matter implies that atheists are fundamentally sensible. I whole-heartedly agree.
Thank you Mindy. I'm probably being too legalistic about it, but sometimes I like to get to the fundamentals.
Oh wait.... :-)
best. religion. ever. we have no rules, require no beliefs, are not required to gather, give money to charities of our choosing, don't exclude anyone (except for the obvious), and its completely sensible. doesn't sound particularly religious to me, but call it whatever you want - it's fucking awesome!
And we don't have arbitrary rules about what kind of food we can eat or drinks or stimulants we can have, just because some "God Said So."
And, even better, we don't have arbitrary rules about what kind of sex we can have, and with whom!
Nothing tied to millennia-old patriarchal worldviews, and women being passed from father to husband. Nothing about keeping the family lines "pure" and inheritance clear, and being fruitful and multiplying and increasing the religion's market share. No insistence on ignoring the dramatic social good of effective contraception, and necessarily connecting sex with procreation, on this planet of 7.14bn+ people.
Ethics derived from empathy and reason -- just as with religious believers when they reject formerly upheld tenets of scripture! -- are sufficient to point us towards being safe, sane, considerate, and consensual. (This allows for many kinds of sexuality and relationship styles, and much more room to be true to ourselves!)
Food freedom, marriage freedom, offspring freedom, relationship freedom, and best of all, sex freedom. halleluhitchens!
Matt, that does sound like the best religion ever.
i like it :) it IS such crap to call atheism a religion, but morons will be morons.
sure fucking is!
you figure out your Skype yet? we could be talking right now!!!
