The FREE inaugural Colorado Secular Conference will be taking place in Grand Junction on July 21st. A variety of speakers and topics will be presented that will be of interest to the secular/nonreligious community. The conference is being sponsored by the Colorado Coalition of Reason and funding making the conference possible is being provided by the United Coalition of Reason. Our goal has been to create an opportunity for secular/nonreligious people from around the region to gather to learn, networks, share ideas and form lasting new friendships. Speakers are flying in from as far away as Washington D.C. and North Carolina. We will also be raffling two separate pairs of tickets to see Bill Maher perform at the Pikes Peak Center.
TOPICS AND PRESENTERS INCLUDE:
What Does It Mean To You?– Various questions and terms will be posed to the audience for discussion by the president of Western Colorado Atheists and Freethinkers of Grand Junction, CO.
Ignorance Becomes Intolerance: The Truth about Religious Liberty– Widespread ignorance and misinformation about the rights and limits of religious liberty is breeding a new form of religious intolerance. A distorted interpretation of the U.S. Constitution is leading Christians to believe they are victims whose rights are under attack. As this false perception of persecution grows, it diminishes an individual’s right to believe as he or she chooses and chips away at the wall of separation between church and state. This topic will be presented by Kelly Damerow of the Secular Coalition for America based in Washington D.C.
An Introduction to Humanism– Presented by Humanists of Colorado of Denver, CO.
Good for Goodness’ Sake: The Importance of Volunteerism and Humanitarianism as it relates to the Secular Movement– Presented by Humanists Doing Good of Grand Junction, Colorado.
The Patriot Act: Its Impact on Civil Rights and Liberties– Presented by Dr. Kathleen Hynes of the Colorado American Civil Liberties Union.
Building, Growing and Better Understanding Secular Groups– This free three hour seminar/workshop is presented by Michael Werner (former president of the American Humanist Association), who will be flying in from North Carolina to speak for the United Coalition of Reason.
An optional tour of the Grand Junction area is being offered the day after the conference for anyone who may be interested. Anyone who would like to attend the conference should register online at the conference's website.
