 I think many (if not all) religious and political leaders are actually atheists.

They know they (and the people they associate with) have been doing evil for years, going against many of their god's "rules to live by" and have continued to prosper despite their "sins".

There has been no celestial punishment for them, so they have to know there isn't going to be for anyone else either.

The SHEEP are just not smart enough to figure it out.
