I agree with your saying. The worst aspect of religion/Gog to me is the power others claim with it/Him. For me, history, especially pertaining to religion, is more terrifying than any Steven King novel. Hell, my Bible teacher in 9th grade scared me by telling me off an exorcism she attended. I was afraid of what she'd do to me if she knew I was an atheist.

Karl Marx had it exactly right: "Religion is the opiate of the people." I suspect that Lenin and Stalin learned that the hard way when they tried to get the general population to go "cold turkey" from it.
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?
Not as pithy as some, but some 2300 years later and still waiting for an answer.
