Not necessarily cowards. Sometimes just someone who is confused.
Why I like what Dennett said is because you can hear so often that religion is a foundation of morality. Anything Dawkins tries to intelligibly explain about the evolutionary origin of morality, is being always ignored. I remember a radio show, in which a host (forgot his name) was asked something like: "If you are an atheist, then what stops you from raping, stealing and murdering?" In which he replied to this idiot: "With an attitude like this, I hope you keep believing in a god"

This problem has occupied much of my thought since meeting the late Madalyn Murray O'Hair, who put it in the context of a much-touted moral imperative: patriotism. She pointed out that as she served honorably in the military, the rubes were her pet peeve when they suggested atheism was not patriotic. (Of course we all know that nothing could be more patriotic than atheism since the atheist is more likely to say, with Tim Rice, that "My country's only borders/Lie around my heart.") Perhaps the problem is that genuine communication is only possible among equals. Dennett and Dawkins continue to preach to the choir. Have you seen the stats on how many scientists our educational system contributes to the world each year vis-a-vis, say, China?
