Cardinal Dolan has given an interview in which he says that were it not for the contraception mandate in Obamacare, the Catholic Church could have been a strong supporter.
The first thing to understand is the sheer hypocrisy of this. There is an exception in the law for churches and religious employers—carefully defined—but no exception simply for businesses owned by Catholics. Secondly there are twenty eight states which have similar mandates—that insurance which covers prescription drugs must include contraceptive drugs as well.
This term the Supreme Court will hear two cases on the question of religious liberty and contraception.
Since the Court has six Catholic justices, it should have no problem in deciding that a business may refuse to follow the mandate of the ACA and of the laws of twenty-eight states in requiring that health insurance which covers prescription drugs must include contraceptive drugs so that the owners can freely practice their religion in running their religion.
Look for a 6-3 vote on this one.
