Human beings are a queer lot! Every human society appears to be dividing itself like an amoeba! Religions, nations, political parties, any kind of human association seems to be running towarsd a split. Athists are increasing numbers, so we say and think. They are spread all over the world. Sanskrit language has a very apt description of human mind. It says " Pinde pinde matirbhinnah, kunde kunde navam payah!" Every pond ahs diffferent water and every man has a different mind. Atheists are a particularly difficult lot. No atheist will accept anything because someone tells him to. Domination by numbers will simply be rejected.
How are we going to maintain our unity? We must lay some ground rules to maintain our unity. We can not allow ourselves to stand divided. Any ideas how it can be done?
"I'm sorry to hear that you were getting such negativity on Facebook"
I very much alarmed to know that I am getting negative publicity on Facebook. I do not know why discussions here go to facebook and why people talk bad behind one's back?
"If you want to be Facebook friends with me - I can be your back up :)"
I am indeed very greatful to you for your offer and glad to accept the same.
She was talking to Joan.
If I have misunderstood, I withdraw my reply. Thanks for your clarification.
Hooray for atheism!
Hooray also for employee ownership of business, which I hope is your anti-capitalist position.
There's a lot of employee ownership in today's US of A; I haven't googled it because I have reading of it and supporting it for forty years.
I have one small quibble with what you wrote. Do you belong to organizations, or do you have membership in them?
Slaves/serfs/etc belong; members have rights.
No, I generally don't join groups except for tracking down ideas on the internet. This often sends me to sites that clarify my thinking, not to buy into another's opinion, but to rethink and consider other options. Writing on this site has resulted in gentle yet firm challenge to my ideas. That is a very special gift and I am so grateful for the people who participate here. Thank you, too, for your feedback.
A question: what is your quibble? Can you make a statement from your question?
Joan, I am always happy to see your reply. "A says, "I think this and that." B says, "I haven't thought of it in those terms; this is what I think." The goal is not to change another person's mind, it is to speak, hear, and acknowledge each other and clarify. ... I mean "period".
This the crux of the idea of unity. I would love to hear your suggestions.
I have no particular suggestion. When I am puzzled, I ask for clarity. and thanks for asking.
it ain't gonna happen..... :)
Atheist simply means that we don't believe in God.... not a very broad base....
We are all from such different place, culturally, politically etc....
And that's OK...... I like the diversity, I enjoy the difference - I like to be challenged and introduced to new ideas, and learn to respect difference.... :)
If you want a philosophy/ideology/social group of atheists, try Naturalism, Rationalism, Skepticism, Humanism among others.... :) I have taken something from all of them.... but I think I like Naturalism best :)
Greg, I think we need to take stands on supernatural thinking, not because we want to harm, but because problem solving and conflict resolution takes more than handing challenges off to some god that may or may not be real. The terrible harm that my own family experienced because of religion is not because religious people intend harm but the systems of religion harm individuals and the planet. The use of fear is so prevalent, and the myths of safety and security in belief in god catches vulnerable people like nets catch fish. I have found no reason to maintain and perpetuate ideas that feed off of peoples' fear and feelings of helplessness and loneliness. Pain is real, not to be denied or avoided, but one needs to take on those dreadful experiences, challenging them with very careful critical thinking and acting.
I live in Australia and having an athiest prime minister here - I haven't noticed any lacking in rights for myself as an atheist - as compared to any other citizen.
I am supportive of atheists in other countries having the same rights as here in Australia.
Is this what you mean by unity?
