I just wanted to see how many different kinds of people we got going on this site :D
Just give a holler and let everyone know what area you represent!
I'm from Brampton, but for the sake of simplicity I'll say Toronto! WOO!

Permalink Reply by Collin Arneson on March 27, 2012 at 10:43pm Northern suburbs of Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN. Namely, the district responsible for electing Michelle Bachman into office, and the school district (Anoka-Hennepin district 11) famous for GLBT suicides.
My parents had the fortunate good sense to not indoctrinate me with any vestiges of their moderately religious upbringing. They are both (agnostic) atheists now. Throughout elementary school, I had no belief in gods, rejecting the idea out of hand. I got quite a bit of flak for that - I distinctly remember my first experience "debating" against a believer. During middle school, I flip-flopped a couple of times, and in high school I made up my mind after some careful research and consideration.
I was lucky, in a very religious area, to be raised without being required to believe the Christian mythology. I can't imagine that's very common around here.
Permalink Reply by Tom Sarbeck on March 28, 2012 at 1:57am Collin, I hope the incompetence that Michelle showed the nation awakens your district's voters.
Here in CA's SF Bay Area, several cases of in-school bullying of GLBT students led to lawsuits against school district officials who'd done nothing to stop the bullying. Those officials lost in court.
Permalink Reply by Collin Arneson on March 28, 2012 at 7:38pm I sure hope so, too. I know that there is at least one candidate running for her position now, and after her display, I think it's pretty likely that we won't see much more of her. That may be premature, however.
At least these cases are being fought. Better late than never, I guess.

Permalink Reply by Tom Sarbeck on March 29, 2012 at 6:16pm Welcome to A/N, Nontheist Central from the city which, like Rome, has seven hills. I once lived between Hyde Park and Norwood, and later in Mt. Washington.
Permalink Reply by Nontheist Central on March 30, 2012 at 10:31am That's REALLY close to me. I'm in the Colerain area right now.
Permalink Reply by Tom Sarbeck on March 30, 2012 at 12:45pm I recall my dad mentioning Colerain, I think Colerain Avenue. I would have to check a map to make sure but it might have been one of the ways we went to visit my mom's best high school friend and her family in Deer Park. In the 1930s my older sister and I went to Sharpsburg Public School before our dad put us in St. Matthew's Catholic School. In '39 we moved to Mt. Washington, and in '47 to St. Pete, Fla. I'm now in CA's Napa Valley and I tell people I happily evolved to atheism. Cheers.
