What's your favorite 'atheist' song? (Mine is John Mayer's 'Belief'.)
...Or at least one you interpret as atheist in nature...

Permalink Reply by FreeThinker on July 6, 2012 at 9:24pm During the Hagar era, Van Halen had a song on 3 consecutive albums that kind of took a shot at organized religion. The first was "Best of Both Worlds", the second was "Mine All Mine" off OU812, and the third was "Judgement Day" off For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge.
"Mine All Mine":
All the words on the wall look the same in the mirror
Every riddle and every clue
You've got Allah in the east
You've got Jesus in the west
Christ, what's a man to do?
They'll find a cure for anything
Just kill the pain or numb my brain
We see a man speakin' the word of God
Provin' to be a fraud, while his own church applauds
Stop lookin' out, start lookin' in
Be your own best friend
Stand up and say "Hey! This is mine!"
"Judgement Day":
It's my life. Get off my ass, get outta my face
Man, I don't see no problem
Kickin' back, ain't kickin' you, no no!
Anyway, if I make 'em, I'll solve 'em
Making plan's a waste. Ain't no future here
Got no faith, got no religion
Oh tell me why should I
Care or even, why should I try?
I just slide slide on by
Never bad enough to crucify me
I know that Sammy Hagar is religious and believes in Jesus, but I don't know what exactly his religious views are now or were then.

Permalink Reply by Chris Ruegg on July 2, 2012 at 10:35pm That's a good one. The Lyrics are as follows, if anyone is interested.
I felt your grip begin to fade
You kept me tied, blind and afraid
But then I broke you and saw
The look on your face said it all
So could you feel the way I felt
Did you kneel the way I knelt
Did you stand up and yell
Pleading for someone to help
Or listen to reason
Open your eyes
It's a wonder what you'll find with an open mind
You may be surprised
Yeah
Gotta get away from this illusion
For the sake of the world, this delusion
It's gotta, gotta, gotta go-ooh
Yeah-ooh
If the dark is just a thought
Then the light is in your mind
The lies we tell ourselves
Will ruin the world with time
Did you feel the way I felt
Did you kneel the way I knelt
Or did you look up and stare
Waiting for your acts of prayer
Won't you listen to reason.
Will you open your eyes
It's a wonder what you'll find with an open mind
You might be surprised
Yeah
Gotta get away from this illusion
For the sake of the world, this delusion
It's gotta, gotta, gotta go-ooh
Yeah-ooh
Gotta get away from this illusion
For the sake of the world, this delusion
It's gotta, gotta, gotta go-ooh
When is it enough
When will we all wake up
So look around
And see what's right before your eyes
No control beyond these skies
Gotta get away from this illusion
For the sake of the world, this delusion
It's gotta, gotta, gotta go-ooh
Yeah-ooh
Gotta get away from this illusion
For the sake of the world, this delusion
It's gotta, gotta, gotta go-ooh
I also like Larry Gallagher - I Am Better Than Your God
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPPrUoPYZhI
Lyrics:
There's an old guy with a beard
Whining in the sky
Picking through his fan mail as we live and die
He's watching our every move
From the cradle to the tomb
Who is righteous, who is lame
And who is poking whom
While infidels broil in hell like so many cod
Don't want to be crucified
But if God is on your side
Then I am better than your God
I am not fully formed
I'm petty and I'm vain
Driven by fear
And susceptible to pain
But I'm trying to be fair
And I'm trying to give a shit
And I'm trying to keep on trying
Though it's trying I admit
I'm a bumbling brute in a monkey suit
A spinning, grinning clod
It's funny and it's sad
But you know things are bad when
I am better than your God
Nothing I have heard
Nothing I have seen
Nothing so absurd
Nothing so obscene
As taking a love so deep
And free, and whole
And twisting it into something
That is smaller than your soul
Load your guns, chosen ones
Does that strike you as odd?
I'll gamble on his wrath
Cause if you do the math
I am better than your God

Salvation's around the corner
Just dig into your soul
Donations for the holy word
A paycheck for god's goal
His iron-handed, spiritual rule
Is that what you fear most?
God is green, a numbered face
A scamming holy ghost!
God is broke,
The well ran dry
So pay up while you can
Or you'll end up in hell
Money in the box is like
A halo on your head
But all of Christ's love
Still leaves him with the dead
Permalink Reply by David Sensei on August 14, 2012 at 12:35am I can't help but notice all the nominees here, worthy tho they be, are original contemporary songs rather than anthems as such. For those, you have to go back to the old-time hymns and tweak 'em a bit. Here's one of the best loved. You know how it goes.
Come offend the slaves of Jesus
Lies and myths I cannot bear
What an imbecile to carry
Everything to god in prayer
Oh what lives we often forfeit
In the land and sea and air
Tsunami, earthquake, flood endorse it
Fire and drought but god's not there
Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
International relations
Augur nothing but despair
Oh what peace we often forfeit
Simply coz we don't prepare
War and famine underscore it
Here and there and everywhere
Are we weak and heavy-laden
Cumbered with a load of care?
Bet your ass, mother and maiden
Don't be taken unaware
Does your god despise, forsake thee
When children are no longer there?
Nature's power will overtake thee
Run like hell, don't kneel in prayer
