Welcome!
I'm not against gods; I just simply don't believe in them. So, I call myself an atheist.
Permalink Reply by Richard Haynes on September 5, 2011 at 2:20pm I used to use this one a lot. However, then I realized I am not anti theists. I am anti theism. I know it's splitting hairs, but a correction I made to my own views.
Permalink Reply by Chris Wright on September 5, 2011 at 3:53pm Personally, I tend to like "atheist" better. I think I am a fairly nice guy, and the word tends to shock people when they hear it. I like that, because it creates an immediate contradiction. So many people are turned off by the word "atheist," but then they find that this friendly "nice guy" not only identifies with the term, but is very accepting of the label. It starts raising questions in their mind . . . which is how I became an atheist in the first place. So, I don't think "antitheist" is improper, I just think "atheist" fits me better. All a matter of personal preference.
Be well-

Permalink Reply by John Loq on September 6, 2011 at 3:34pm Being anti-theist, would basically mean anti-god no? Whereas atheist is without a god.
Being anti-god kind of sounds like believing in a god, but wishing there weren't any.
Maybe the best name would be Realist, and it just so happens that in reality there is no god, and theists can be damn annoying, bringing more hatred then love, and more ignorance then illumination...
being a Realist, you simply embrace all those facts :).
Atheist is more of a word to be used by theists, marking us in relation to them.

Permalink Reply by John Loq on September 6, 2011 at 3:41pm Wait a minute... It looks like people are using a lot of different definitions of antitheist. It doesn't mean you're opposed to theists, it means you're opposed to theism. That's pretty different. I love my theist brother, but I think theism is harmful to society.
From wikipedia...
An antitheist is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as "One opposed to belief in the existence of a god." The earliest citation given for this meaning is from 1833. An antitheist may be opposed to belief in the existence of any god or gods, and not merely one in particular.

i've got no problem with everyone saying "merry christmas" on christmas day. however, they've turned it into an entire holiday season where it lasts a month or more. in those situations it should be perfectly acceptable to say "happy holidays" or call it a…

I posted the bulk of this on another thread, but wanted to add some context separately.
I finally confronted my faith and embraced the fact of my atheism late last August, 2012. Days after I revealed my "epiphany" to a few friends who knew me from another message board, my sister died from Lou Gehrig's Disease (which pissed her off because she hated catching a disease from someone she never f---ed).
THAT was my sister, understand? She was a beautiful, life-loving, potty-mouthed…

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…

This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.
I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…
