Alabama Atheist

Hi everyone! I'm new to the site, so I'll introduce myself. My name is Kim. I'm 27 years old and I live in Alabama with my fiance and my four-year-old son. I was formerly a devout Southern Baptist. I deconverted two years ago. Since then, I have grown in so many ways, I feel. I am now proud to call myself a secular humanist (although, in my environment, I must often explain what that means). I despise religion, yet I am intrigued by belief and the, um, reasoning behind its possession. I sympathize with most believers as I was very recently one myself. I am an agnostic atheist, and I feel that this is an intellectually honest position; however, when pertaining to organized religion I am as confident as anyone could possibly be that it is all....rubbish.

I enjoy reading, primarily nonfiction and especially anything science related. I am fairly current with the goings-on in the YouTube community. (Never hesitate to send me links to inspiring or hilarious videos....you'll make my day.) I take my son to the park often and we also enjoy watching movies, playing games and flash cards, and arguing with each other over every little thing (or so it would seem :P). He likes animals of all types: prehistoric (i.e. dinosaurs), modern (i.e. lions), and fictional (i.e. dragons and monsters). He is also the only person who likes to hear me sing. I love to run and dance. My only New Year's resolution this year was/is to build myself up to 5 miles a day, 5 days a week.

I am a vegetarian. I am pretty much a socialist; my political/economic views are still very much so evolving. Any book recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I am beginning to have an interest in philosophy, though I have much to learn. Despite having been an avid reader all of my life, I often feel....very ignorant compared to several of my fellow atheists. I blame this partly on indoctrination, and partly on my background. But I am changing that. Or at least attempting to do so.

My favorite books are Douglas Adam's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything. My favorite movie is Donnie Darko. My favorite bands are Breaking Benjamin and A Perfect Circle.

I hope to make a few friends here and engage in some interesting and enlightening conversations. Please do not take my silence for inactivity, as I follow more discussions than I participate in. (Usually, more intelligent, articulate people will say what I would and better.)

Welcome to our site maam. Atheists do tend to favor the smarter end of the spectrum. Only on rare occasions is this any problem. Generally it simply leads to convos that are more interesting.

I too am living in Mercas bible belt and I understand how hard up it can get wanting to have an exchange with someone that involves any more thought than Mercan Idol or "God said it. So I believe it".

Hmmm...Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything? I'll have to check it out.

After reading your intro I might suggest you try Richard Feynman's autobiography Surely You're Joking, Mr, Feynman! It's one of my favorites. (Hitchhiker's Guide is another)

Welcome kim. I too am a bible belt atheist (originally from Mississippi) now living in Tennessee. I am a computer/science geek and my wife and I are avid readers. A short list of my favorite authors are, Richard Dawkins, Bart Ehrman, Carl Sagan.

Howdy!

It seems I've found a kindred spirit. I am also a fan of Bryson's Short History, Donnie Darko, and APC. Have you read Bryson's A Walk in the Woods? It is hysterical.

As far as book recommendations go, I recently have read Christianity: The First Three Thousand Years by Diarmaid MacCulloch and highly recommend it. It is very thought provoking and I learned much by reading it.
