I am an agnostic; I do not pretend to know what many ignorant men are sure of.

I guess it would depend on what Darrow takes comfort in not knowing. After all, agnosticism is the view that one cannot make any certain judgements of whether God does or does not exist. Some people would call that waffling or as I once heard an old professor of mine say “an agnostic is a person who’s afraid of commitment”.

As for me, if a person is unable to decide one way or another about whether s/he believes in a God, should I be at all concerned about whom s/he judges to be “ignorant” for taking a side in the matter?

Probably not.

I agree with your old professor.

A theist is a person who has faith in the existence of a god.

An atheist is a person who does not have faith in the existence of a god.

Now, you can argue about whether or not there is a god, but you can NOT argue about whether or not you have faith in the existence of a god.

You have faith . . . or you don’t.

I’m not sure what an agnostic is . . . except maybe a cowardly atheist.
