In the past they just killed any dissenters. And now, more than ever, we have excellently strong scientific substantiation.

I don't really see it like that. You're either an atheist or a theist, there is no real middle ground between those positions, even though one can be confused over their own position (agnosticism deals with a whole different issue entirely).
Of course the position of theism versus atheism by itself is about as descriptive of ones character as ones hair color... and biblical is hardly the only flavor of theism out there.
