Atheist Nexus

The World’s Largest Coalition of Nontheists and Nontheist Communities!

There has been much talk of what would make a good Atheist Nexus logo, and many rumors (hint hint) of a logo design competition. I know we have many creative people in our community who all have their own unique takes on what makes a good logo. What we must first consider is what the point of a logo is in the first place.

According to the almighty and infallible Wikipedia: "A logo (Greek λογότυπος = logotypos) is a graphical element, (ideogram, symbol, emblem, icon, sign) that, together with its logotype (a uniquely set and arranged typeface) form a trademark or commercial brand. Typically, a logo's design is for immediate recognition, inspiring trust, admiration, loyalty and an implied superiority."

So we have our key elements here: positive first impression, ease of recognition, and branding. These elements must come across as effectively as possible, and therefore as simply as possible. Consider these logos with high impact: the Apple Computer apple, Disney's Mickey Mouse ears, the Nike swoosh, the Yahoo! logo... They are all simple, bold, and easily recognizable. They all have impact.

Prospective logo designers, I encourage you to check out these pages on logos, and to do your own reading before you start your design work: Wikipedia on Logos, YouTube video on Logo Designs (notice how the more complex logos require more viewing time, and therefore lose some of their edge), Logo Design Love - a logo design blog, What Makes a Great Logo (this site also has great "before and after" logo makeovers), Logo Designs create Brand Recognition, The Small Business Bible's take on logos.

As an exercise for you all, I would like to see you fill the comments with existing logos from other companies that you think exemplify the key elements: positive first impression, ease of recognition, and branding. My hope is that we can be inspired by the greats, and enthusiastic on making the name of Atheist Nexus great as well.

Please, no original submissions here. Lets keep this about good elements of logos and marketing.

No, not an exception, but rather evidence that supports my point. Obviously, very few people today support what the swashstika represents, but as a logo it was a huge success! Think about it - just a glance of it evokes an emotional response in almost every person in the world today. This is the epitome of brand recognition, and what good marketing is about.
The logo was never meant to represent evil....this, to me, was bad marketing. The original "whirling logs" symbol was used by, among others, Native Americans, to symbolize good fortune, the four seasons, stages of life, etc.....

Aside from that, the most recognizable logo in the world:

True, Jo(e). And may I add: that's trippin', RK.
I found this one - I thought the symbol through the middle looked like the atheist symbol I've seen about.

Here's the word "Nexus" with the same symbol through it:

This one's very classy - maybe the symbol could be a stylized curve and light rays like the current one:

Yay for GIFs!
I like that bottom one a lot... it says "atheists are classy and sexy" ;)
Yes, classy and sexy is something we should impress upon the world with our logo.
A few years ago Minnesota Atheists held a contest to design a logo. (You can see our current logo at mnatheists.or). I liked one of the losing entries, that had the capital letters M, N, and A superimposed, in a way that looked in part like argyles.

I thought that was a great idea. Then the argyles could be the fashion statement of atheism. If you saw someone with argyle sox or an argyle sweater, you would know he was an atheist.
I support this concept. :)
I LOVE that! Yes...Argyles unite!
This is the kookiest idea I've ever heard - and I LOVE it! An atheist pattern - it's fabulous! It's almost as good as everyone walking around with a towel slung over their shoulders to celebrate Douglas Adams (Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy)!

Here's some info on Argyle from Wikipedia:

"Most argyle layouts contain layers of overlapping motifs, adding a sense of three-dimensionality, movement, and texture. The overlapped argyle design is claimed to be the oldest known attempt at two dimensional spacing in history."

Sounds like something we could mesh with atheism.
