There has been much talk of what would make a good Atheist Nexus logo, and many rumors (hint hint) of a logo design competition. I know we have many creative people in our community who all have their own unique takes on what makes a good logo. What we must first consider is what the point of a logo is in the first place.
According to the almighty and infallible Wikipedia: "A logo (Greek λογότυπος = logotypos) is a graphical element, (ideogram, symbol, emblem, icon, sign) that, together with its logotype (a uniquely set and arranged typeface) form a trademark or commercial brand.
Typically, a logo's design is for immediate recognition, inspiring trust, admiration, loyalty and an implied superiority."
So we have our key elements here: positive first impression, ease of recognition, and branding. These elements must come across as effectively as possible, and therefore as simply as possible. Consider these logos with high impact: the Apple Computer apple, Disney's Mickey Mouse ears, the Nike swoosh, the Yahoo! logo... They are all simple, bold, and easily recognizable. They all have impact.
Prospective logo designers, I encourage you to check out these pages on logos, and to do your own reading before you start your design work:
Wikipedia on Logos,
YouTube video on Logo Designs (notice how the more complex logos require more viewing time, and therefore lose some of their edge),
Logo Design Love - a logo design blog,
What Makes a Great Logo (this site also has great "before and after" logo makeovers),
Logo Designs create Brand Recognition,
The Small Business Bible's take on logos.
As an exercise for you all, I would like to see you fill the comments with existing logos from other companies that you think exemplify the key elements: positive first impression, ease of recognition, and branding. My hope is that we can be inspired by the greats, and enthusiastic on making the name of Atheist Nexus great as well.
Please, no original submissions here. Lets keep this about good elements of logos and marketing.
