Atheist Nexus

The World’s Largest Coalition of Nontheists and Nontheist Communities!

There has been much talk of what would make a good Atheist Nexus logo, and many rumors (hint hint) of a logo design competition. I know we have many creative people in our community who all have their own unique takes on what makes a good logo. What we must first consider is what the point of a logo is in the first place.

According to the almighty and infallible Wikipedia: "A logo (Greek λογότυπος = logotypos) is a graphical element, (ideogram, symbol, emblem, icon, sign) that, together with its logotype (a uniquely set and arranged typeface) form a trademark or commercial brand. Typically, a logo's design is for immediate recognition, inspiring trust, admiration, loyalty and an implied superiority."

So we have our key elements here: positive first impression, ease of recognition, and branding. These elements must come across as effectively as possible, and therefore as simply as possible. Consider these logos with high impact: the Apple Computer apple, Disney's Mickey Mouse ears, the Nike swoosh, the Yahoo! logo... They are all simple, bold, and easily recognizable. They all have impact.

Prospective logo designers, I encourage you to check out these pages on logos, and to do your own reading before you start your design work: Wikipedia on Logos, YouTube video on Logo Designs (notice how the more complex logos require more viewing time, and therefore lose some of their edge), Logo Design Love - a logo design blog, What Makes a Great Logo (this site also has great "before and after" logo makeovers), Logo Designs create Brand Recognition, The Small Business Bible's take on logos.

As an exercise for you all, I would like to see you fill the comments with existing logos from other companies that you think exemplify the key elements: positive first impression, ease of recognition, and branding. My hope is that we can be inspired by the greats, and enthusiastic on making the name of Atheist Nexus great as well.

Please, no original submissions here. Lets keep this about good elements of logos and marketing.

I have spoken with Richard about this but I am still not sure what he thinks. I don't suppose people tossing around a few ideas will hurt anything. As soon as I get my computer with Photoshop working again, I will join in the fun.
You don't need Photoshop, just link to a good logo out there you've always liked. :)
Oh, that IS sexy!

I like this logo. It's simple and elegant. It says what it is, and has a symbol representing its heritage (it's in Ireland) without hitting you over the head with it. Cute, memorable, bold, effective.
This one is great:

I like this one, I have to admit:

Oh, i LOVE that one! Great logo hunting, Skylar.
Oohh...how could I forget this one at a time like this!

Don't kill me for this one -

Good example!

May I point out to everyone: APPLES HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH COMPUTERS! But it is one of the best logos out there.

Symbolism is not required to make a logo successful, only effective design.
I'm a bit biased when it comes to these logos, nonetheless, I think were I to be unbiased, I'd one the same one drastically better than the other:

These are very good, both of them, because the designers were paid to create the best possible impression. When looking for marketing ideas, look to politics for inspiration!
