This may already have been covered, but, If all good Christians are meant to study their bibles:

"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." (2 Timothy 2:15)

"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." (Psalms 119:105)

How come there are an awful lot of illiterate, mouth-breathing, halfwits that call themselves devout Christians?

I was under the impression to "study" (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/study (read this one yourself))
effectively insists that one is capable of reading and a modicum of understanding to interpret said literature.
Does this in fact mean that the borderline simpletons that spout scripture verbatim because they've been spoon fed it from birth, without any actual understanding, cannot infact be considered Christian at all?
